Why is it that in an 89 GM there is no real easy way to get at the button to remove the headlight switch knob? I have tried under the dash pad and got no where, removed the knee bolster and a dead end there, removed the fuse block only find another dead end. Ultimately I had to remove the dash bezel and then the screws to the headlight switch it self along with alot of twisting back anf forth of the bazel just to ge the screws for the switch out. It really dont make any scence at all. Others I have had have been so simple, move a panel and reach up, push the button and there you go. Has anyone else with an 89 seen a better solution? I think this may only be the 89, I have had two 88's and an 85 with no problems at all.

They're a bitch to do, no way around it. Why they designed it that way is beyond me. Lincolns have a plate you can unscrew and pull the switch and all right out through the front. Fords and Mercurys require the hand contortion BS.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

When I changed mine, I already had the dash pad unscrewed from a heater core job. I left it loose for a speaker upgrade. With the dashpad out of the way, there is a hole in the left side of the dash, where you can get to the switch , and release the knob assy. While you are in there, check the harness connector, as they are notorious for burning up. If there is ANY discoloration, replace it now. They are available at most parts stores.

What? You guys didn't get the memo that said you are supposed to buy a new car when something "major" fails? =-)
I don't have popeye forearms so managed to shove my arm into some available gap after removing whatever plastics where removable.
