The only thing that interests me about that item is the heat sink.

The wiring and all that you could do yourself.

yeah, you can nab those heat sinks from lots of TFI fords...

Alex, I assume you've done this?
Can you plug right into the distributor with spade connectors, eliminating the need for the 'modified module' in the kit shown? And does the heat sink need to be grounded?
I like this idea... I've wanted to do this but didn't know it was this simple!

yes, you just need spade connectors of the proper size, and ideally a shielded wire for the extension. No magic involved, just need to make sure the heatsink is of reasonable size so the module doesn't overheat. No need to ground it as far as I'm aware, but it won't hurt you any. If you'd like, and if you are using shielded wire, you can ground it by attaching the shield to the distributor, and to the heatsink with a screw and a ring terminal.

I think the main appeal of using such a "modified" module is that it still bolts into place, whereas you'd have to rig something up to keep plain spade connectors held securely otherwise.

I'm guessing its the pip signal that needs to be shielded?

yeah, its a fairly low voltage signal and you can get funky induced voltages from other things. Running it too close to a leaky plug wire would probably really screw with it. The factory TFI harness is sorta shielded. Its got a foil wrap in there to keep out unwanted interference.

The original use of the diagram I posted is for an emergency backup tfi module. You can make it completely out of junkyard parts, try it, and toss it in the trunk. Probably something the folks who've had ongoing issues with frying tfi modules might want.

Don't forget heatsink compound between the tfi and heatsink if you make one.

oh damn, the PIP wires pass straight through the TFI module. Hell that would make it really easy, just leave any old module on the distributor and remote mount a new one.

to make two modules in series, with just the three wires hooked into the 'dummy' one??? :confused: it sounds too easy!

here i am bringing this good thread back to life! lol this is an interesting concept. is this something good to have for emergency purposes or i guess its just easier to have just a spare module? and who here has done this?

You can harvest all of the wiring you'd need from a '95 5.0 mustang, the tfi module was relocated to the fender. It might've been done earlier.

The later Mustangs take a different distributor though. You have to swap distributors to use their remote relocation thing, and the TFI itself used on those has more pins on the plug to make up for the 3 that don't push directly into the distributor.
