Fuel pump issues... try this FIRST!!!

thought i would put up a post for peopole that not always the fuel pump goes out. i would check the cheaper fixes first. go after wires, the inertia switch and the fuel pump relay BEFORE the fuel pump!!!

Yeah, since seeing that the fuel pump is not the easiest thing to replace.

I've been down that road twice so far and I think I learned my lesson. The first time was with my Grand Marquis. I was working on the fender relays and water from a rain shower got into the fp relay and fried it. The second time was with my friend's Mark VII. Her's had a short in the wiring so the relay and inertia swith were fine, and the pump would even prime every so often. The guy that found and fixed it says it was something he really never sees.

I've found that, in general, whiny fuel pumps can be fixed by a swift kick in the rear and sending them to bed without supper. It'll learn soon enough to ask for things like an adult fuel pump, and life will be much more peaceful.

The Bosch/Motorcraft pumps seem to last a really long time in these cars. Mine was replaced at 80k, was around 23+ years old, and still runs fine so now I have a spare. They all whine, new or old so I don't think it's a problem.

my car has a aftermarket walbro 110lph .... and it's the 3rd car it's been installed in....first was an 87 mustang 2.3, then an 87 Corwn vic....now the 89 country squire. It's pretty loud, buit the wagon has a stupidly small pickup pipe.

I've yet to replace one due to failure, I upgrade them.
