    Headlight Relay Kit

Does anyone make a headlight relay kit to reroute power away from the headlight switch? I know the concept, I'm just not very comfortable with doing much wiring myself. If there is a kit available, I'd prefer to go that route.

I did one on my car about a month or so ago, a box Grand Marquis. I got mine from RJM Injection Tech since my wiring and electrical capabilities are limited. I have the harness hooked up to my driving lights, so I guess I'd need another for my highs? The only thing with this harness in particular is it's set up for H4/9003 lights so I had to change the wires around in the connectors to match my H4656. Also the plug on my car wouldn't plug into the harness (H4 connector) so I swapped it out as well. Some people do upgrade to the H4 connectors in which case you'd only swap the trigger plug (one plug used from existing headlights) wiring over the the H4 setup and connect it to the harness. which is fine after adding the relays, but I wouldn't recommend it without having relays installed. I chose not to since I didn't want to buy new bulbs and prefer the glass sealed beams.

Wow that is a lot of dough and that is only for one set of lights...*faints*

Looks really nice but if I did it I'd probably get the car caught on fire. Wiring and electric are my weak points. The price seemed pretty comparable to ther other kits I've seen around.

I bought a cheap one on ebay and in the maybe 3 months total it was in my Mark VII (which I do not drive daily btw, 7000 miles in the last 15 months), its nuked 3 sets of relays. I built my own for the Towncar with a set of headlamp sockets I got from the junkyard and cheap relays with sockets I got on ebay and its been in place and untouched for nearly 3 years. It also cost me less in parts to make it myself. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for, so if you don't want to do it yourself, get a quality one otherwise you might be making things worse than they are now.

My thoughts exactly. RJM tech isn't bad price wise but the important thing is the quality of stuff they sell.

I did what Gadget did and it's still going strong too.
I could put a 'plug-and-play' kit together with OE stuff... if anyone is interested in paying for one. If you want credentials for my skill, just look at the fuse-box install link in the sig.

I may be interested in one down the road for my friend's LSC. Her light output is piss poor especially with the headlights yellowed as bad as they are.

Can you let me know how much it would cost, Pete? I do want quality and something that looks OE. I'm sure I could cobble something together on my own, but it wouldn't be up to my standards and I wouldn't be happy with it.

Yeah I could not find one four headlight system. I made my own. I used a complete harness from a 89 vic. Not hard to make just time consuming lol

I'm not sure about the cost... the pick and save for some reason charges $5 per foot for wiring harness... last time I went, I had to pay the same price for the alternator charge harness as the alternator itself
I've got to check with the old junkyard I used to go to and see if they will make a deal. The only other costs would be for whatever relay holder I can find (I don't like loose relays), in-line fuse holders, loom, connectors, etc. Then the time it takes to strip the harness down to just the headlight wiring, re-wrap it and hook it all up to the relays and power/ground wires. I'd put it together doing a mock-install in one of my boxes so everything would be plug-and-play and direct bolt-in.

If i had to guess I'd say it may be around $50-$75, about half in parts and half in labor.

I don't have pics yet, but I've put a harness set-up together similar to Dave's. I bought new relay pigtails, and got ahold of 2 relays with the metal tabs on them for easier mounting. What I also did, is remove the wires from the pigtails, and changed their position to coincide with where they go. I used the orange for battery power, blue for ground, red on the one plug for the low beam in and out, and green for the high beam in and out on the second plug. All connections have been covered in heat shrink for protection from the elements, and have been loomed for extra protection, and to clean everything up, and keep it neat. Another thing I did was, is I put plug connectors on the harness and the relay wires, so that it is a real plug in deal, and if for some reason I should/need to get rid of the car, all I have to do is unplug everyhting, and transfer it to the next vehicle I get. I will try to get pics either monday, or tuesday.

Get one of those kits from a car parts store that fixes yellowed headlamp lenses. They're about $20 and they make the lights like new again.

I didn't get more than a half volt extra out of the Mark VII with the relay kit. Good headlamp lenses make a hell of a lot more difference. If they're beyond salvation, the originals from my car aren't too bad. I found and installed a nicer set but my originals are still pretty clear. With a polish they'd probably come up like new.

BTW, I got about 2 volts improvement with the relay kit on the Towncar. Made a big difference in light output there, not so much on the LSC.

They really do need a polish, I've tried some old kits in the past and it helps. The main thing is just getting the time to when I'm free and she doesn't need the car for a few. I'd really like to get her foglights hooked back up, I think the one side has a broken bracket but I have both lights stored in a box somewhere. I'm really not a fan of composite headlamps.
