    Heater is tempermental

The heater in my 88 TC has been acting strange since I got it. When I turn the heater on all the way, at first it will be really hot. then, the A/C turns on and it's really cold, and it won't go back to heat. When I turn the car off and back on, it might be hot, or the A/C might still be blowing. When it sits for more than a couple hours, it goes back to being hot for a minute then A/C comes on again. What the hell is going on? I've replaced the switches in the dash, and it didn't help.

You mean the compressor kicks on and it gets icy cold??? thats odd...

Its common for the ATC sniffer to go bad and act like that, but usually only gets as cold as outside air.
You can replace the sniffer or for full blast heat pull the vacuum hose (and plug it) for the blend door, located right behind the glovebox.
Other options include plumbing in a vacuum regulator valve you can control for the blend door, or de-volving to non-ATC, which no one here has done that I know of.

? I am not good at interior work. I would not have any clue how to do that.

And yes, the compressor kicks on by itself.

Do you have it in defrost when this happens by chance? that would explain the compressor.
Next time it happens, open the glovebox and reach through it on the left side and feel around for a 3/8"ish vinyl feeling hose attached to a round grey-ish cylinder, and pull it off, see what happens. You should get full heat if the car is warmed up.

Only positions the compressor can run in are AC, defrost, and mix. The hot to cold thing is quite possibly an ATC sensor but the compressor kicking in is most likely the control lever in the wrong position.

I'm having a similar problem with my '05 GM....

A few days ago the heat wouldn't kick on then finally it did nice and toasty. Now when I turn the control to AC, the system blows lukewarm slightly humid kinda moist air. The compressor clicks on. The evaporator is functioning normally as evident by the puddle under the car.
It's like I've got a vaccum leak somewhere in the controls and a door in the duct work isn't closing. Right now Atlanta is still hot enough in the day time to need AC but cool enough at night that light heat is nice to defog the windshield.

Newer cars are a totally different animal. They have electronic controls and a blend door servo motor that fails, along with this funny module that handles fan speeds. Might want to run the eatc self-test. Not sure the procedure on an 05, but it should be in the shop manual.
