    ? about 3g alternator

hello everyone, im new to the forum but have been reading this site for well over a year now. Have one quick question for the 3g upgrade. will an alternator for a 95-96 mustang be a direct fit into the 89 crown victoria brackets? If not which 3g alternator will be a direct fit ?

If you have belt fitment issues, you can swap the slightly smaller stock pulley onto the 3g and get a little more clearance.

I ran stock belts with the larger 3g pulley without issues for quite some time. I honestly don't know why some people can make it fit and some can't, but all I can tell you is it worked for me, and that the slightly smaller pulley will give you a little extra room to work with on the belt. I wouldn't be too surprised if things changed very slightly year to year. I've had some cars that were a bitch to get the belt on, and some that you couldn't make it tight enough. Who knows.

I want to say I've noticed slight variances in the case with different applications I've harvested/looked at

Oh yes you can, and don't get me started on whether I can prove it  You can also swap in V-belt pulleys from 1G and 2G alternators, along with serpentine pulleys from the 4G and likely the 6G units. I have at least 5 serpentine and two V-belt pulleys here right now, all different diameters, and they all fit the 3G rotor shaft just fine. Minor grinding of the front case may be needed to clear the pulley, but there really is no pattern to what pulleys interferes with what case - if it looks like the pulley will rub, grind the case down, 1/32" is about all they need.

n00b question: What do I look for in a used alternator? I mean, assuming I know it's coming off of the right vehicle, several of which I have to choose from, how can I tell if it's any good? Can I?

why are you going to need more than 130 amps?
Look for one that looks like it was recently replaced of course, always give them a spin and check for pulley wobble and bearing noise.
