    Ac question

I guess ill post here since it seems like all of a sudden i stopped getting replies in the newbie forum.A couple weeks ago after spending almost 2,000 dollars on my 1986 Colony Park wagon(they fixed the evaporator core instead of fixing only the heater core),anyhow i would luv to know why the ac barely blows out on full blast. And if the temp is really hot outside, its worse.Like i said it blows, just feel like it needs a swift kick in the ass and itll spit out much better but i am a complete noob when it comes to cars. The other pressing issue is the car has been stalling while idling a lot lately.I mean it shivers, shakes, idles high then low then high then low and sumtimes will finally die hasnt cut off while in gear or actually driving tho.it seems as if when it gets warm it stops, but if it cools off for 30 mins it does it again.I am determined to get her running right as she is my only car.Any and all help is appreciated.

    Thanx in Advance

I'll bet they didn't get one or more of the air ducts hooked up good when they replaced the core. That's what's wrong with my heater.

As for your wandering idle, I'd bet money that your IAC (idle air control) is gunked up. It's mounted on the rear of the throttle body. If cleaning it with lots of carb cleaner, doesn't do the trick, I'm sure someone on GMN probably has one laying around they'd sell reasonably.

in Atlanta Ga hmm i think u hit the nail on the head wit the ac.they replaced the evap core and sumthin else put freon and she barely blows..like its struggling or as u said feels as if sumthin is clogged,is that a easy part to come by if i take it in to a shop.?the idle valve thing that is and btw how many parts are there on a 86 cp is there for the ac system to work. i know the blower has been fixed but its been a while but it wasnt used as the ac needed more work, the evap core freon and something else was just replaced.it will be in the shop 2moro.just kinda looking for a heads up

There is a lot of stuff in the AC system. If the blower is blowing, and the air that does come out is cold, I'd have to suspect an air door or air duct issue as well. When I put mine back together, I didn't have it tight and it was doing a hell of a job refrigerating my glovebox. Open yours up and see if a bunch of cold air is blowing out. If it is, they didn't get the parts lined up right, or the foam piece that goes between the air plenum and the air ducts is missing or damaged.

IAC can usually be cleaned. Its the round film canister like thing on the back side of the throttle body. Its held in with 2 bolts. Remove it, and spray it out with some carb cleaner till black crap stops coming out. Put it back on and see if it helped any.

Also, when was the last tuneup? How old is your fuel filter?

I wonder if a vacuum line isn't off and thats causing a vacuum leak which would explain the in-op AC and rough idle.

The AC will hiss and gurgle after shutdown. Its just the gasses equalizing in the system.

well thats not what you said. You said it was cold, but didn't come out of the vents. If anything is getting cold, it means the compressor is doing its job. Once the compressor stops forcing gas through the system, it will equalize pressure through a really little nozzle. That nozzle is right ahead of the evaporator, which is inside the car just ahead of the glovebox. Thats the hissing and gurgling you hear.

There are various other climate control noises tho. A creaking groan, followed by a thump is a common one. Its an air door slowly losing vacuum and thumping shut.
