Look for holes in the can, on the bottom or the side facing down, water can collect in the can and rust it out from the inside. Check the line running from it too, could be cracked or something too.

check it for vacuum leaks. Also check the thermal blower lockout if you have one, and the check valve at the vacuum tree for leaks and to make sure it works. The system defaults to hot defrost (ATC) or defrost (non-ATC) in the event of a loss of vacuum. The soup can's purpose is vacuum reserve to hold the doors to your settings when accelerating. The check valve is part of that too. The TBL switch serves little purpose other than to leak, but if its sucking air it will empty the soup can real quick. I found this out on my car after replacing a defective soup can for $28 and still having it shift to defrost.

I have seen some of you guys with a round ball type soup can. Where did you get it from? I have looked and all I can find is the same thing I have.

Chevys have the round ball. Later Panthers have the square box that looks computer-ish. There are also two sizes of soup can, the Dinty Moore size and the Juicy Juice sized can. ATC got the Juicy Juice can, non-ATC got Dinty Moore. Functionally, I don't think it matters at all, so long as the thing holds vacuum.

The black plastic box on the driver's side fender with the yellow writing on it is the late panther vacuum box, and it also houses a few relays. 85crownhpp put this (in addition to numerous other upgrades) on his 85 because it doesn't rust like the soup cans and just looks a hell of a lot better. I don't think I've ever seen anyone put the round ball one on a box panther, but I could be wrong.

It doesn't, mine worked fine with the small one. I think the only difference I noticed was that when I changed my selections it took a sec longer, like from floor to vent. But really, I don't think its a big deal.
