    Dome LIGHT

I had removed the domelight in the merc a while ago, cuz i noticed(after i got my vinyl top re-done) that it was working backwards...the light would shut off when i opened the doors and turn on when i closed them. I figured they removed my headliner when they redid my vinyl top, could they have screwed something up in there? i tried switching the connections on the domelight and the problem persisted..is it the domelight fixture itself?...crossed wires?
is there a universal domelight i can get? or should i pull one from the JY?

also the little lights on the side are acting funny, they turn on but VERY dim and dim the main bulb when on...

looks as if there is a ground issue. check that the main screw (not screwed into any of the wire terminals) is screwed in.

you know what, i think that might be the problem, i think they installed it using only the 2 screws that run through the wire terminals, without using the ground screw...now to find a screw that fits

Yea i had a similar problem a while back, but i know for sure you NEED that one screw to properly ground things in the unit. Find something that fits and hopefully you will be back in business.

You don't have the thing backwards right? I once for shits and giggles hooked one of those up reverse, with the maplights facing the rear. The dome light would come on when I hit the maplight switch. They might have mixed the two wires up.

thats a ground problem for sure. Whats happening is you're completing the circuit through other lights in the system. I actually had to take my light out just to figure out how the hell it actually got power. Screw contacts is actually sort of clever. I had figured there would be a plug up there.

              now what?????????

ok so i hooked up the dome light, this time with the ground screw as you guys told me, it worked perfectly...for about a minute, next thing i know there is smoke coming from my fuse panel, i yank the fuse that controls the interior lights/radio/clock and it is hot as hell...the fuse is a 40, there was a 25 originally in there but i blew it working on it last night.
is it because im using the wrong size fuse?
i put a 30 in there and nothing would work until i pulled the dome light back out

what the hell is going on?

              heres a few pics

Put the right size fuse in so it can blow before the smoke comes out. There is a reason why those are sized like they are. 25 amp sounds high, but I couldn't swear to that. Check it against the owner's manual.

The problem isn't the larger fuse, you had a short somewere. I'll bet its that broken plastic on the wire. If there was smoke coming out, you may have melted some wiring though, and thats another problem entirely.

While you're there, grab another dome light and the correct screws.

oh nice. I'd definetely grab another one from the junkyard then.

i am guessing that a wire burned thru under the headliner and grounding out someplace or a door switch is messed up... to have the vinyl redone, they had to pull your interior apart and might have messed up wiring. to do your vinyl they had to undo the trim outside by accessing it from inside the car. before you lose your car to fire, double check all your wires... since you are going to junkyard... pull headliner and stuff out to see how it all werks instead of tearing your car apart. best way to learn how it werks is a junkyard car to get better idea.
