hey gadget73, i was lookin at the wiring diagram you posted.. here is my ?. I'm putting a new steering wheel(a grant wheel) in my 83 and was wondering about just using the cruise buttons and wires out of the factory wheel, remounted on the dash or something. The way i understand the diagram the horn power wire supplys power to the cruise than there is only one other wire in the column for the cruise. IS that right? i could just hook up to the two (or three, LB/BK, Y/LG, and BK wires?) wires where they come out of the column (under the dash) and use the factory buttons? or am i thinkin all wrong?

ya i know they do. but i don't want to spend $120 on it, and ithink it would look funny on my 8.5inch wheel.

There are 3 wires for the cruise, a ground, the hot (horn) and the output to the speed control module. The system powers through the horn relay. If you mount those buttons somewhere else and tie into the original 3 wires it should work though it might look a bit odd.

Mount it on one of the trim panels, like the thing under the instrument cluster, in the fake wood.

thats kinda what i was thinking. but on the right side of the column. maybe on the lower left corner of the panel that the clock was mounted in.

That's a little far to reach to set cruise control in my opinion. You could get one of those police clock deletes and fit them in there though. If you want to go that route, it's your car.

well i put the wheel on and moved the cruise buttons last night.. i ended up putting them in the panel you suggested.. it was the easiest place to put them. i have a tach in the hole the clock was in. it was an easy process to move the buttons. only had to cut the wires off the contact points behind the steering wheel and pull the wires out of the column. than spliced them onto the buttons after i removed them from the wheel. took the 3 screws out of the pannel and pulled it off. cut a hole in it and mounted the buttons. than just ran the wires down the top of the column and plugged in the wires.
i'll post better pics when i get them loaded on the computer. this pic is just a cellphone pic i just took so its kinda crappy.
