17" or better is spec. 20 is really super, but you'll only get that on a very healthy motor.
I disconnect the line to the evap purge solenoid near the battery and connect the vacuum guage to that. Its a decently large diameter hose that goes straight to the manifold. Its about as accurate as it gets.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
