    FYI: 3G alt pulley diameters

    This is FYI.

Went to get the 3G alt I had ordered for the '90 GM today. First problem, the outer diameter of the pulley was 3". The 3G alternators on my '88 and '89 are 2 5/8" outer diameter. The 2 5/8" pulley will fit the stock belt. It's a tight fit, but it works. The 3" diameter pulley, however, does not work with the stock belt. I couldn't find a belt that was one size up (no one carries it around here). Two steps up and the belt is way too long. I'm waiting for another 3G alt to come in next week. I will not settle for anything but the 2 5/8" pulley. The pulley from the 65 amp alt will not fit the 130 amp 3G alt. The 65 amp pulley lays against the 3G case and the shaft is not long enough to back it out with washers.

Hope this saves someone a headache in the future. I'm putting my original 65 amp back in until the right alt shows up.

What year & model car is the 3G from?

        My 1989 has a 2G and the pulley is 2 1/8" and the 3G I have for my upgrade has a 2 3/8" pulley.

I ordered the 3G for a '94 Mustang. Second alt I got was a 2 5/8" pulley and worked perfect. The one you have will work fine.

I beg to differ - the first 3G that went into the townie got its stock pulley removed, and received the pulley that is stock for the 2G alternators, surgery involved an air impact gun. IIRC the washer between the 2G pulley and the retaining nut needed removed, as the 3G shaft is indeed a bit shorter. Said alternator will soon be installed in a notch-back Mustang.

When I did the upgrade on my 86', I ordered a New Advantage alt for a 95 Mustang 5.0 like the Scott mang told me. The pulley that came on it was fine, and the belt went on easy enough.

Some go on easy, some do not. I've also seen different brands of belts be a little different length, even though they were the same size.

I really don't understand why you guys want to get the alt from a Mustang, when there are ton of Taurus in the junk yards. The 3.0 Taurus is a small frame, is a bolt on, and your old belt will fit. What could be easier?
