    dead battery

ok i have a 87 crown vic, i just bought a new battery last week, and now after it sits a while the battery goes dead, i know how to trace battery drains using a voltmeter, but is there any common things i should check out first? also i noticed when i push on the rear defrost button to "on" it will light up for a second..is that normal?

    thanks

trunk/hood/glovebox lights are pretty common causes... afaik the defrost light is supposed to light up when you press it.

is the defrost light supposed to come on when the ignition is off? ill check the other lights, what ever it is, its not a big draw, its fine until it has to sit over night...

the light only stays on for a second, but anything that stays on when the ignition is off seems strange to me, i may just pull that fuse and see if its dead tommorow....anyone know which fuse the rear defrost is?

ok i jump started it, runs normal, no warning lights, i pulled all the suspect bulbs, i pulled the positive battery cable, doesnt die, but engine picks up in idle speed, i dont have a volt meter with me right now, the battery is under warranty so im not too worried, i have limited experience in tracing electrical shorts so hopefully this will be as easy fix.

defrost will come on with the ignition off, but its not supposed to stay on. its got some sort of nonsensical mechanical catch thing inside that won't hold unless the key is on. It wears out and the defrost will stay on. It will also kill the battery in 4-6 hours.

hmm...ill check that out, the light goes out after a few seconds, i dont really need defrost anyway, is there a way to disable it from getting power? i cant seem to find any other potential drains, i guess ill know more tommorow when i go start it....

unplug the fuse would be the easiest. Not sure which it is on a Vic. I fixed mine by replacing the switch, it stayed on with the key off, the light was on and all. Got one out of a junkyard car, and no more problems.

on your 1987 CV... the defrost is connected to the solenoid thru a fusible link. i know this because i forgot to reattach it when i removed Donnas solenoid for werk and her defrost didnt werk. i was reading and it showed it connected to solenoid and has a fusible link as the fuse.

Push the defroster switch down, then it should be shut off.
