So the other day I decided to put an after market head unit into my 1986 Crown Vic. After I put it in it kept blowing the five amp fuse which is also for the dash lights. To fix this I ran a wire from the battery straight to the head unit and gave it it's own fuse. However the dash lights still don't work. I checked the fuse and its good so I'm not sure what the problem could be. I wasn't to sure what to do with some of the wires behind the head unit because I didn't know what they went to. If anyone has an idea how to fix this or if they have a wiring e-book or in depth wiring diagram for this car I would greatly appreciate it.

What wires did you tap into for the radio power? Did you connect any of the stock wiring to ground or pinch the wires?86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

The dash itself should have some sort of voltage regulator IIRC but it sounds more like a wiring problem. Did you use a proper harness to for the install or just splice the head unit in? The 86 stereo wiring is ehhh and should be common ground so you'd probably be best running all new wires to the speakers anyhow. Also, most gauge lighting problems I hear about always seem to be tied to a crispy headlight switch.sigpic

the dash lighting should be a blue wire with light red stripe or something simmilar. You might have wired it to something or shorted it somehow as suggested.Pete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements
