    Cruise control efd up.

Driving down the highway today and had the cruise control on. Then I came up on a stop sign but when I hit the brakes nothing happened, the car kept accelerating. I had to shut it off with the button.

Do your brake lights work? Last time this happened to me the fuse for the brake lamps was bad.

There is also a vacuum dump system under there that should pop the cruise in the event of an electrical failure. Look at the cruise servo. There is a line going between the "halves" of the servo, and there is a Y connector on it. One of those vacuum lines vanishes into the abyss. Thats the vacuum dump line. If thats not hooked up anymore, that could also be related.

For the vacuum dump, you'll hear short whoosh sound from down by the brakes when you tap them while driving around at normal speed. If you don't hear that noise, then something isn't hooked up down there like Gadget said. I thought the Ford system had a safety backup for disengaging when you hit the brakes?

primary is an electrical cutout that powers off the brake lights, the vacuum dump is the safety. If neither work, your car wants you to die (or find the problem)

Just found out that not only does my cruise stay on, but my brake lights don't work either.

Found the problem, just a blown fuse.

Still tho, the vacuum dump should've disengaged the cruise, whether the electrical is there or not.

If its not set in there right, it might take a bit more pedal travel to make it function. If memory serves, the vacuum dump pushes through the brake pedal bracket and contacts the arm from up there. If its in too far, it either won't work, or will need a lot of pedal travel. according to the official shop manual, adjustment is thus:

hold brake pedal down and push dump valve through its adjustment collar (its just a push-through deal, like the door switches)
use a .050 shim on the surface that it contacts and pull the brake pedal fully rearward
remove brake pedal and remove shim
metal plate on the brake pedal assembly should be in contact with the white dump valve plunger, but not the black dump valve housing
