    Electric Fan installation

I'm installing a Mark VIII 2-spd electric fan, and I'm just wondering which color wire is high speed and which color is low.

...and I'm guessing that I'll need a second fan controller kit in order to use both speeds, correct? If that's the case I'll just hook low up to the thermostat and high up to a switch so I can use it with the car off in case it ever overheats badly.

The instructions tell me to tap into a wire that's only hot when the ignition is on. What line would you guys recommend for this? I'm going to go check out my EVTM and see if I can find something close to the battery.

Nevermind about all of this. I just tapped into my power window circuit breaker. All I need to know now is which color is high and which is low on the fan. Does anyone know?

what size alternator do you have? electric fans use a lot of power....at least the ones for the Taurus do...I would recommend a 3g swap soon. Even if the fan you are using is a low amp...it would still brighten up your lights and everything.

          I put a 150 amp 3g in there a couple weeks ago.

Nevermind on the high/low thing guys, I figured out which was which pretty easily. Fan's all installed, just gotta figure out a good way to mount it to the radiator.

Yeah, that's all I have to do before I can test it. Right now it's leaning back against the water pump because I have to get some sheet metal to make some brackets. Could some other people post some photos of their brackets? I already have in mind what I'm going to do, but it'd be good to see what other people did too just in case they thought of something better.

EDIT: I heard that you had to cut off the ears on the sides of the fan in order to make it fit, but I have plenty of room even with the ears. What's up with that?

Or you could do like I did on my install drill little holes in the fan shroud and just use black zip ties.

I fashioned my own brackets using some angle iron, a cutoff wheel, a drill, and a grinder... doesn't look too bad either.

But now I've gone to test it and I've run into a problem. I let the car warm up until it was up to the O in NORMAL on the gauge, which is hotter than it always ran at back when I used to drive it constantly. The fan doesn't come on. I tested the fan before I installed it and both speeds worked perfectly. My only guess is I installed the Derale fan controller kit incorrectly. It's the non-adjustable one that is supposed to come on at 180" and shut itself off at 170". I'm going to have someone go down in the garage with me and double check my wiring because I'm partially colorblind and it's entirely plausible that I switched the green and the brown, or the orange and the red.

I'm going to go boil some water past 180" and dip the thermometer in to see if it runs the fan.

Does anyone know how much amperage the fan draws? This kit is for 25 continuous amps... I would think that's enough.

Ugh, okay this thing must have a defective thermostat. I ordered a Derale fan controller kit off Summit, p/n DER-16738, and it's not working. I know for a fact I've installed everything correctly, and I also know my grounds are good and my fan works perfectly when I jumper it. I've tested the thermostat in a cup of water that was well over 180"F I'm going to call the tech help on Monday and see if they'll exchange just the thermostat. If not, and if I have to tear into this wiring all over again to return everything, I'm going to buy from a different company.

What fan controller kits did everyone else use?
