Does Anybody Have a 1987 Thunderbird???

Or a Mercury Cougar of the same year??? I have an electric fan from one of those cars and I would like to hook it up to the 86 CV. It is a Delco Products fan and there are two numbers on the back: CAV-1 and F-23. I need the specs (what kind of ampreage it draws, what engine it cooled, etc..) for this particular fan, however, I don't have an engine manual for the Thunderbird and I don't really want to buy one. I looked on the Delco website, but they don't seem to have a search engine. I don't think they would have info on this fan anyways because it is twenty years old. I went to the Chiltons website and you have to register (for a $20 fee) to look up parts. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Delco is usually GM mang. My ma's '87 T-Bird Sport 5.0 has a plastic bladed mechanical clutch fan, and so did the '88 Cougar (also 5.0) I workedon for a friend. Moneypit has a TurboCoupe, maybe they came with electric fans?

I dont think they started with the electric fans till the 90s with the 4.6 motor, or at least the 5.0 HO. All the Fox tbirds I've seen had lopo 5.0 or 3.8s and a clutch fan.

I got this fan a year and a half ago from some guy a few blocks away from me. He said that his son left what the rest of his Thunderbird project in their garage after college. He had the front grille assembly, rear bumper, lights and lenses, and the fan on the curb with a for free sign. So I took the fan off of his hands. Perhaps the fan came from something else and it didn't make it into the project. It runs pretty strong and pulls a decent amount of air. I will find out where this fan came from. Though I will probably just get a thermostat and wiring kit and make it work in the CV.

All of this time I thought I was the only one around here who almost routinely parks their vehicle in the driveway to repair or mod it. Who knew? Though I wasn't really around back in the day so I guess all of the home made projects are gone with the people who built them. Now I am inundated with people that either don't care about this hobby or just send their stuff out to be built by someone else.

The only 1987 T-bird or Cougar to have an electric fan was the Turbo Coupe or Turbo XR7 Cougar (not very many built from 1983-1986, but none built in 1987 that I know of). It might be a little too big to install in there, depth-wise, as the 2.3 fan motors were not pancake/flat fan motors.

The problem is that if it is the Turbo coupe fan, it won't be enough to keep the V8 cooled off.

It does look a little on the small side. Eh, it was free so I might be able to find another use for it. Perhaps the Ranger could use it. Stock 3.0L EFI engine, yeah maybe it will in there.

The 16" or 14" (I have to measure the CV fan shroud) Be Cool electric fans look like a decent deal. I'll probably go with that.

Nah, just bolt the fan to the front bumper, along with a gas or diesel generator capable of providing 660 volts into the trunk, and wire the main feed straight into the two wires on the fan motor. The fan should now spin at around 450,000 rpm, and actually pull the car forward now.

That would be awesome; for squirrels, small birds, and insects. Scoop up the goop and voila; instant stew. Now what to name that stew, since this is a new recipe. For now we'll call it Pirate stew until I can come up with a better name.

As for the fan thing, I might try and find one off of a Taurus which seems to be a good swap on GMN.

i had both the '87 cougar 3.8L and an '87 t-bird 5.0L and niether had an electric fan. probably off a turbo or rx-7 maybeout of a capri i had one of those that was an '85 3.8L that had electric. but that thing overheated all the time, the fan couldn't keep up. go with one off of a taurus i put one on my 5.0L t-bird and it worked fine. actualy it worked better that the stock mechanical. i just had to upgrade the altenator to the 3g.

An 87 TC fan is a huge dual fan unit with a shroud that covers the whole radiator. If it's just a single fan with metal rods for attacment points it's a 2.3L EFI mustang fan.
