My 82 grand mercs gas gauge didnt work wen i first got the car and the dude that sold it to me told me it was the fuse that needed to be replace in the fuse box. I bought some new fuses and replaced all of then and it still didnt work. So i just bought a whole new gauge to put in my car to replace the one that the car came with.....It still dosent work and the gas light is on all the time. Can i fix it buy running my own wire from the gauge to the fuel pum. I need to know gas is kinda important now.

The fuel sender in the tank could be bad, or maybe the wires got disconnected. If you look at the front of the gas tank, the sender is right in the middle. there is a little plug on it that might have gotten knocked lose, mine was really corroded to, might want to clean the terminals up too. If you end up having to change the sender its very easy and only takes like 10 minutes. There is a lock ring around the sender that needs twisted off, using a little piece of wood and a hammer or something (anything that wont spark, no metal on metal). then the sender pulls out. Re-install the opposite way. Hopefully that helps you out a little

Actually, you can pull the sender out, just make sure you don't have a whole lot of gas in there! I didn't do this, and got a shower of gas, almost doing permanent damage to my face!
Then, make sure the float isn't full of gas. If it is, replace the float, and your gas gauge should work again
You can test the sender by having the ignition key on, and moving though the full sweep and having a friend look at the gauge and see if it's moving.
to GMN! I had this same problem, and replacing the float made my gauge work again

There isn't any hose connected to the sender, just two wires wrapped in some black rubber. But yes, you can unplug that. Heres a pic of what you are dealing with:
once you twist of the lock ring the sender just pulls out and looks like this (the top one in the pic), see if that little yellow float is full of gas, if it is then just get a replacement float and you should be good to go:
