    Speedometer Misbehavior

The speedometer in my 1990 is going crazy. It works, then dies, then just wags the needle all around, sometimes settling down to normal, sometimes not.

Started around Christmas when it was cold but would do better once the car was warm inside, and would be fine all the rest of the day. Now it's doing this all the time.

I replaced the speed sensor since I had one handy, no change.

Odometer works when the needle is bouncing but not when it's stuck at zero for however long it decides to be.

Am I looking at a stepper motor issue? How much fun are they to replace? The cluster is the 140mph version, I do have the original 85mph if it can be used for parts.

loose connection to the cluster probably. May just need to make sure the cluster didn't peal a trace when you plugged the cluster in.

It's behaved nicely for several years until now. I will pull it out in the near future and have a look.

Could be a loose wire in the speedo head going to the stepper. May have to check for cold solder joints. That may be a PITA.

Sounds sort of like mine, as I’m sure you’re aware. I bought one from Pete because the newer ones don’t work and there isn’t a 90-91 box cluster around. If you find a part number on the stepper motor let me know. I’d like to have a spare cluster. I couldn’t find a similar stepper motor on google.
