The steppers can get sticky. The one in my Mark VII lags real speed by about 2 needle widths in either direction. Accelerating it reads slow, decelerating it reads fast. Works out to about 5mph off. I've tried lubing it and its slightly better but I think the rear bushing in there is gummy and there isn't any access.

The odometer in the mark was also not running when I got it. There was a capacitor across the power feed to the motor which had blown up and was keeping the motor from running. One new cap and a drop of oil in the motor and it runs fine now.

I haven’t fully installed it so I’ll pull it again. Is there a way to test the stepper motors? It’s really strange that everything worked until I pulled the cluster the first time probably about a year or so ago. Everything looks ok but I’m no electrical engineer. Maybe a power surge while reinstalling it did something, who knows.

I checked the continuity for the speedometer stepper motor and compared it to the other two. It has much higher resistance. I’m thinking it’s the stepper motor. Anyone know of a source for these? If I can find a cheap enough cluster I’ll pick it up and swap the whole board over.

Have you checked EBAY? If nothing doing there, it may be a junkyard item only.

I was able to snag one for pretty cheap right after I posted. Pete ill keep you in mind if this one doesn’t work out. Thinking about it more, I think I had the car in accessory when I pulled the cluster the first time. I bet I fried something.

I swapped the board over from the new cluster and now the speedometer and odometer don’t work at all. It’s out of a 93 or 94 mgm. Either it’s not compatible electronically or something is dead. I’m pretty irritated right now.

That's entirely possible. The traces may be different. Put them both next to each other and see if things run to different places from where the connectors go to it.

I swapped the gauges out of my 90 onto the “frame” (including the 93-94 rear plastic circuit board) of the newer cluster. My train of thought is maybe the printed circuit board would work with the corresponding frame. Well the trip odometer works but the speedometer and odometer still don’t work. The pins are slightly different between the two, I’m thinking that could be the issue.
