    A/C in my '86 Tudor

So I believe if my memory is correct, that last summer the 134 was down in my car as the temps out of the registers showed 70 degrees on my "Blue Point" thermometer. I added one can and the result was marginal, I added a second can and that did the trick (note it had been several years since I had to top off the system). Ok that's the back story. Yesterday I had to drive out to the east end of Long Island in the early morning, leaving at about 4:30 in the afternoon. The traffic was horrendous on the GS Pwky, and the flow did not open up until I hit the LI Expressway where I was able to enjoy most of the ride at 60MPH. As it was hot and humid I naturally turned on the A/C, I did not expect the following!............the air coming out of those vents (as shown on the Blue Point) was a fairly steady 38 degrees on high blower position),,,,,,,,something I was never able to achieve in the past! So my question is was this a fluke, is 38 degrees to be expected with a system running on R134 and not R12?

I'm no A/C expert, but I can tell you that my '88 Town Car will freeze your giblets right off. So if anyone tries to tell you not to expect great performance from a converted system, that's nonsense, least with boxes.

You CAN get those temps if the system is running correctly. Strong air flow over the condenser for heat transfer is crucial. VERY difficult, if not impossible to get that in stop and go traffic I've got my friend's AC down to about that so you can keep meat in his "88 CV!

Many thanks for the feedback, nothing like floating down the expressway in my "boat" and enjoying the cool temps!
Btw, in stop and go traffic I have to shut off the a/c in m y Avanti, the compressor will stall the engine

Adjust the base idle in gear with a friend with the A/C on. You probably won't like how high the idle is without the A/C, though.

One would think, if it is factory AC, there would be a "facility" to kick the idle up when the AC is on?

If you get it right they are plenty cold with 134a, a lot of it has to do with airflow though. If the fan is weak it will do badly, moving down the highway mostly makes that a non-issue but the condensers just are not as efficient as a newer 134a system and with low air flow the temps are going to climb.

On carb engines there was usually a simple vacuum or electrical kicker to shove the throttle open a bit. If its stalling, fair guess its not working or not adjusted properly.

Well sort of, the car had a Carter AFB when new and a "dash pot" which would engage when the engine was about to stall.................but that carb is long gone and in its place an Edelbrock 1403, and you guessed it..........no ability to put the old dash pot(kicker) on the car. Yep, no A/C kicker dashpot means, "There's your problem." Didn't realize it's got the proper three pedal setup. With that, the higher idle won't be as much of a nuisance. So if it was my car, I'd bump the idle up in increments of 100rpm with the engine hot and A/C on until it quit stalling. It'll make taking off easier as a result too, a bit less throttle needed to achieve the same result.

Really clean engine bay by the way, you could eat off that.

R134a STILL available unless they pull it "as it might cause climate issues like causing sparrows to fart excessively" or some other nonsense. They may require certification for it like they have for other issues but one never knows does one?

You can't find it locally at any parts store or Walmart?

You can buy the 12oz cans, but if you want the 30lb jug you need a license.

I can find it at any auto parts store, Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply, or WalMart.
