Yeah, they are like driving a couch on wheels but you do need to check for structural damage. If there is, it is time, no matter how difficult, to say good bye.

I've seen folks pull the trim off the windshield and grind rust holes to bare metal and then fill all gaps with windshield urethane sealer and shove the trim back into the mess left over. Usually on old F150s and square bodies though.

The A pillars should hold up even with holes for a good while, but when the water starts collecting at your feet, you might need to drill drain holes.

the way I've taken to fixing rust is to take the license plate off and drive a new car under it. Once it gets bad its just an endless pit of money and despair trying to fix it. Trust me, I did that on the Towncar, never again.

It's actually very simple. Take a ball-peen hammer (using the ball side) and test all the structural components of the frame. You'll tell by the sound if there is severe rust. If it goes right through or sounds hollow, bye bye baby good bye!

This thread although somewhat depressing (like living in NYC is not depressing enough) has me laughing big time with the responses pouring forth Unless I make a trip to the southwest to hopefully find another "box" I guess I will in time have to purchase another ride to transport my ass around.

We were very lucky this year as the city and environs were not coated with so much salt that it always looked like it was snow covered, Everything- buildings streets, sidewalks, cars etc.

The city chews up cars just by being there.

No Frankie, not at all!!..............I come here for knowledge and yes some humor!!.........sadly I actually believe the country I grew up in during the 1950s is close to becoming history...............and not to be too negative, at my age I plan on just riding off into the sunset...........too "old-n-sick" to carry on as I once did in my 20's! Ok I will try and keep this short, LOL. I could have purchased an alt from Rock Auto. I did not because if it is f-ed up so am I with having to pack and ship back. So ok, I let my bud order one. After two weeks three of his parts sources have not been able to get one???????? I even gave him three part numbers, one for a brand new AC/Delco, one for a brand new REMY, and the other for a REMY reman. So this morning I speak to him and some WD had a new REMY on the shelf. So supposed to ship today or tomorrow The jerk at Advance actually claimed that AC/Delco never made replacement parts for FoMoCo vehicles. What a F-ing A-HOLE.. Will advise the next chapter as soon I get more information. LOL, as an aside I can not tell you how many sets of AC/Delco made points I have used in my Studebakers (Prestolite) over the last 60 years.

This. More money, time and effort than it's worth. And as I've said numerous times, it comes back with a vengeance unless you shelter the car from weather.

So today I was informed that finally after three weeks a new REMY 92211 alternator was delivered to my buds shop. Curious, I was told the unit contained a external wire harness?.........I will make arrangements to bring the car to him for the install. I also purchased two new FoMoCo alt connectors to splice into the existing harness and toss the existing connectors.
