    '86 5.0 mgm alternator

Gents if it's found that I do need to replace my alternator, what do you suggest I get?...............75amp standard spec is good enough for me as I have nothing special in the car. Should I look for a FoMoCo rebuilt unit, and where to obtain same?? Part number???

If you do get a Motorcraft, the number should be GL520RM (the "RM" indicates a reman). It is a 75 Amp Alternator.

Checked various sites to verify and that is what I came up with (for what it is worth). Would be nice if someone here has a OEM parts list to verify.

I got something with a lifetime warranty. I've had to replace it once now after 9 years. This is on my 93. That was a Duralast and I put a clutch pulley on it to have less wear on the bearings. This one I left the normal pulley on it. We'll see if there's much difference.

the big problem with the stock one is that plug that melts. The added capacity and better idle performance is just a bonus, not catching the car on fire is the real motivator.

Hey Toploader, since post quite a bit and it's all about the same car, how about you make a Readers Ride thread.
You'd have one place for your answers and less clutter on the forum.

My guess is he may not wish to go through the work to do a 3G upgrade and merely change "like for like". Of course, he can answer that better himself.

Frankie, how correct you are!.........understand that my ride is important for one main thing................transporting me out to the end of Long Island where my parents are buried., and second to the garage where my Studebaker is stored. So yes a 3G upgrade would be a "waste" of all too skimpy Social Security funds;-)

Candidly I have yet to be "barraged" by my fellow forum members, nor Thain (our site moderator) about my questions concerning my '86 Tudor. To address your "concern"...........the amount of FoMoCo rides one has, has no bearing on how much "help/assistance" a forum member needs to keep said vehicle operational. Believe me, before I post I have attempted to address/fix my Tudors issues. So sorry that you feel I have "cluttered" up precious forum space. I guess its time for me to head to the "confessional" for such illusionary transgressions.

Converting to a stud mounted charge cable can be done by clamping both the black orange (orange black?... the fat wires from the stock alternator) in a ring terminal that fits the stud on a 3G and getting the small parts kit from LMR which is less than $20 shipped IIRC. https://lmr.com/item/PA-9901/Mustang...mall-Parts-Kit

that said... some of the newer replacement 2G alternators are coming with the charge wires permanently mounted to the alternator so you'll have to cut the old charge harness off anyhow and crimp in the new wires. They all seem to include a new charge pigtail at least. Some are even converted to stud mount.

putting up a thread to talk about alternators is more generic and applies to more than just his car, so this thread is appropriate.

edit: also added alternator to the thread title to help differentiate it.

Thanks Sly, LOL I was on the verge of becoming paranoid about seeking information to keep my ride actually able to drive;-)

we don' really get a ton of traffic on here, and the policy towards moderation has always been fairly hands-off unless its really needed. I've been on plenty of other forums where if you say the wrong thing or post in the wrong spot you get yelled at or suspended or have your posts removed. Not a fan.

Admittedly this thread is fine, I just feel he's made a bunch of very short-lived threads lately.
Eh, I guess I'm just a neat freak and as if the forum doesn't already have an absolute shitton of stuff to sift through when searching for something.

No offense meant towards Toploader, but I still think he could do with an RR thread.
