2G alternator wiring repair (and aero-airbox install)

After getting a good look at my alternator wiring, I want to repair/upgrade it asap. A 3g upgrade would be nice but Im trying to keep it simple ($$$) on the 91.
1st pic shows the prone-to-fire connector looking like its just starting to get a little melty. A replacement is availiable aftermarket - anyone know if one is any better than the other?
2nd pic shows a connector under the airbox inlet that Epi told me about. It cairries both charge wires and a couple others... sure enough, its cracked up and I dont like it!!!! I plan to cut it out and use waterproof heat-shrink butt connectors in its place.
3rd pic shows one of the itty bitty fuse links that both charge wires share.. aint it tiny??? if this burns up... its ends dissapear inside the loom and can cause a lot of headache. Im thinking of replacing this with a 65 amp AGU style fuse.

I'm glad my Box is old so I have the tried and true design from the 60's (a 1G?). Still a 100amp too .

yeah 85 was the last year for the 1G except for police/heated front windshield boxes, they got your 100 amper too

The two black wires are the charge wires, the white one is the voltage reference wire. There should actually be 2 fuse links, one smallish one for the white wire, and one heavy one that the two black wires share. I also wouldn't use a 65 amp fuse. I'd use at least a 75.

i only have 1 fusible link on mine for the 2 black wires.when i tore into the wire loom i saw that the lighter colored wire (i think i was yellow) was twisted and soldered together so it may have had a fusible link in it originally. i have 2 new connectors, one i bought from checker auto and one that came from autozone with my new alternator, they're both identical in appearance and quality. the only difference in instructions was the second one says to solder the butt connectors after you crimp them. the first one didn't but i soldered it anyway.as much corrosion as you have on that thing i'd replace that connector tommorrow. you're probably safer than the cheapest connector than what you have now.

This is what I got from NAPA - the pigtails were shorter than Id hoped, oh well...





got rid of the broke up connector for the charge wires

I left the green fuse link alone for now.... I guess it will be ok. Everything got a good workout when i was done - I jump started a car with a dead dead battery. Nothing felt like it got warm except the alternator itself a little.

Also was then able to install the aero-airbox with a '90 towncar tube and MAF dummy.



heres the spots for the fastening posts to go, the spots that I swore were'nt there (should be on all 90-91 vics/gmq's)

the bottom portion of the airbox is the same for aeros, this one actually came out of a later model vic

I did this mostly to be rid of the stupid in-the-way original airbox... now its easier to check the steering fluid and the engine seems less crowded

This aftermarket wiring harness, does it fix that fire hazzard? If so i'll keep the 2G alternator instead of upgrading to a 3G which looks like a pain in the ass to change.

What I mean is that I hear that there is an aftermarket wiring harness for the 2G alternator. The one that is notorious for catching on fire, I was wondering if that aftermarket wiring harness would fix that problem since mine are all electrical tape and stuff. Also, does it have a wire for the low oil indicator connected? Or will I have to splice it?

lol, yes what you see in the pic is an aftermarket alternator plug designed to replace the defective OEM part.

The oil sender wiring is NOT part of this!!!!

Damn! I thought there was another one, one that had it all. My whole thing is all electrical tape and it looks horrible. So I have to get a better looking one. And then I'll have to splice the new connecter. Thanks.

I have noted that the alternator wiring in Vicky is much different then the grand Marq, Is that due to the 140 amp alternator in Vicky?
