    aod tv cable adjustment info

    Misadjusted tv cables can cause problems with shift timing and quality and can lead to expensive trans repairs. This link is to very good instructions on how to adjust your tv cable. I performed the work described and it has made a huge improvement, and resolved my pinging problems because i'm no longer lugging gears due to ultra early shifts.



    Check it out. Now would also be a good time to replace your 2.00 tv grommet on the throttle body butterfly lever (it's the black one opposite the throttle cable post). When these fail it can lead to your aod going down the toilet.

    1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt
    2006 Lincoln Town Car Signature. Stock for now
    1989 Ford F-250 4x4 much much more to come, sefi converted so far.
    1986 Toyota pickup with LSC wheels and 225/60/16 tires.

                Where can I get the TV cable grommet that belongs in the throttle valve? Mine fell apart last fall, the cable fell out and then jammed the accelerator down as I was coming up on a red light wit a cop in front of me. Anyways, I looked for a used one but parts are really hard to find here in Western NF and I went to the dealer and all they had was the entire cable at a cost of over $100. I tried to match up a generic grommet but I couldn't find one that fit right, so now I have the "plastic block" on the end of the cable held in place with two rubberbands that I check frequently.
                Summer car-> 1988 Lincoln Town Car, triple blue, 335,xxx km. New HO 5.0 in and running. Bought 2006/08/22. June 2017 PotM!
                Winter vehicle-> 1995 Ford F-250 XLT SuperCab 4x4, 284,xxx+km. AKA "Brutus" 460/E4OD/4.10 axles and 12 MPG. Bought 2019/08/14

                  Brass TV cable bushing (not a grommet) costs $5.30 at my local Ford dealer, part #F3SZ-7H303-B. Comes with the retaining spring too, but you might also need to add a very thin washer to get it nice and tight.                     Well I been pokin around the posts and have gotten more then an ear full of useful information I must say, many ideas going now. Anyhow I decided today that I would see where the TV was set since i have never adjusted this besides installing a new grommet. Used the information in matts first post and it seems that the "factory" setting was persumed to be the MIN TV set point. with this in mind i set it to the middle mark. and test drove... well it still did what it was doing originally, but overall seemed to be smoother and held shifts longer, i persume this was because of the added pressure now...
                    anyhows, the transmission seems like it pops outta gear when first begining to drive in the morning or anytime after its been sitting for 5 hours or so
                    u start it up, let the IAC calm down, place in reverse, back outta drive way, place in drive and nothing, rev up a little and in gear it gos.... it didnt do it as bad as it has been now that the TV cable was adjusted but still none the less acted like it was in nutural. also with the addition to the high TV pressure, i should assume there would be added heat and friction? change fluid more? maybe a trans cooler?

                      1. Remove the air cleaner. Have someone floor the gas pedal from inside the car while you bend the THROTTLE cable bracket until the butterfly arm bottoms solidly on it's stop.
                      This part confused me a bit. Is this saying that the bracket needs adjusted by bending to get full throttle movement?

                        No actual bending of the TB plate is required, what the guys meant is that you should push on the end of the TB plate just to make sure it's at the actual WOT - in some cases (like mine) the bracket that holds all the cables gives a little when the gas is floored, so the TB butterfly never really goes to the widest open position it's capable of.

                            When SHOULD the gears shift?

                            - read this thread (interesting)
                            - read my Ford workshop manual
                            - concluded my clunky shift from 3->4 was maybe the TV cable adjustment (as the manual said that was a symptom). (all my other shifts - up and down - were very smooth)
                            - Adjusted the cable such that I was pulling more cable than before (by 2mm)
                            - Now I dunno if things are better or not.

                            So...let me ask this:

                            on a flat road, with light acceleration when should the trany shift into 4th?

                            - before the adjustment this was at 60 kph (36 mph)
                            - after the adjustment it happens about 70 kph (42 mph)

                              if you want your aod to last, much later.......mine shifts into overdrive at 52-55mph under light throttle
