Are there any major differences between an ‘85 AOD and a ‘91 AOD, or would it just be a direct swap? Both are from Grand Marquis’

The shift lever is different. You can swap them; it involves dropping the valve body if I am not mistaken.
There are some internal differences otherwise but they should swap whole unit for another whole unit minus the shift lever.1990 Country Squire - under restoration
