    AOD differences

Are there any major differences between an ‘85 AOD and a ‘91 AOD, or would it just be a direct swap? Both are from Grand Marquis’

The shift lever is different. You can swap them; it involves dropping the valve body if I am not mistaken.

There are some internal differences otherwise but they should swap whole unit for another whole unit minus the shift lever.

There are some internal differences that don't matter for this purpose, but the later one is the better unit

externally its just the shift lever.

is the shift lever just as simple as unbolting it and swapping the lever between transmissions, or will both pans need dropped and the whole linkage assemblies swapped?

Pan comes off and stuff inside has to be undone.

89 would be a direct swap and get the better case and a few better internals.
