They get you when you have a good selection of cordless tools that all use the same battery pack and charger then next year any tool you want to buy to compliment what you have comes with a smaller and yet more powerful battery that will not work with any of your current tools.

I saw a Ridgid commercial that peaked my interest the other day, they claim when you buy and register your tool you get a lifetime service agreement which includes replacement batteries for life.

I have not looked into what they have or the fine print yet when I am ready for a new Cordless tool I will check them out mainly because I have never had any Ridged tool fail ever.

Ridgid, despite being a Home-Depot brand, is a pretty good manufacturer. A cool feature they off is backward-compatibility of batteries. I had a whole set of their cordless tools years ago with the shitty NiMh batteries that died after a couple years. The kit sat around as i couldn't justify the cost of new batteries and couldn't sell the shit either. Fast-forward a bit i bought some of their new-generation Li-ion batteries and they fit my old kit. I now own a ton of milwaukee stuff for work so the ridgid stays with the automotive tools and has come in handy several times.

Far as corded/cordless benefits go, I'll have to agree that the lithium batteries probably made the biggest difference of all. I have a little one-handed sawzall that i use every day and recently procured a 9.0 amp/hour battery for it. I've literally charged it twice in as many months. No joke. I use that little saw a LOT. Still carry my old angle drill and corded sawzall, but scarcely ever use them. Some things i just can't picture being any good cordless are things like rotary hammers. May be wrong at this point but it seems to me those would just be battery eaters. Of course, up until a few years ago, the same could be said of cordless sawzalls...
