86 rear and 97 rear are different lengths. Changed in 90 or 91. Don't know when they changed again.

Did you buy a new carrier or a used one?

Think I had Moser make me 31 spline axles. Cost wasn't much more than the crappy doorman ones. They are the ony ones I could find that did custom lengths.

When I get back to my computer I can get those. The axles I have will be longer than those in my car originally or your car in stock form

The few online sources I find say the stock axles are 30.91" long, which near as I can determine is the same as 30 7/8".

            Does that sound about right?

Interesting. I know before they asked to mail your old axles to them.

probably to rule out problems with measurements from the wrong points.

                7/8" is 0.875. 0.91 is closer to 29/32.

The axles I took out of the '97 rear are 31.5" and that's the length of the Moser axles I have, they've been in for almost a year with no issues.

I used a new Ford diff when I put it all together with the 4.10's, still haven't put the new trans in yet.
The only real issue I had was the studs, I ordered the 3" studs they sell for the Ford rear and a set of stock length studs(1 15/16") they had for the Ford rear, when I got the package it had the wrong short studs and it took a few tries to get the right ones(the guy I was contacting sent them overnight the second time so it only took a week total to fix the issue) but now I have extras that don't fit anything but didn't cost me anything either.

Don't '90-up cars have longer axles? What year did panthers actually get 31-spline axles? I'd like to do 31-spline axles at some point but custom is borderline out of the question.

                        I believe 05 was the 31 spline. My 03 is still 28.

The rear got a little longer in 1990 then again in 1998 and lastly in 2003. On RockAuto they list 1989 axles as 31", 1991 axles as 31.5" and 1998 as 32.25", the 2003+ is 34"
Official change over date to 31 spline for panthers is 12/4/2004(2005 Model year) but the limo package(I have seen a hearse at the yard with that rear in it as well) aero Town Car got drums and 31 spline rears as well, but those are hard to find and replacement axles for those are expensive.

I'm about ready to build the tudor rear, i needs me some 31spline. I think i have a 97 8.8, but i'll need to look at the tag. Might take a look at the online order form for Moser this afternoon.
