    28 to 31 spline

So some time ago I somewhat foolishly purchased a 3.73 gear set for my 86 Mercury Grand Marquis. It was for a 31 spline set of axles though...

So it was decided to replace the worn 28 spline axles with 31s to match the rear end set I ended up with.

Has anyone here ever had 31 spline axles in their Panthers, and if so what experiences did you have?

Gears aren't dependent on axles... The carrier is but not the gears.

Yes. gears are the same either way.

Did you buy a posi carrier?

right, carrier difference. I don't think there are any drop-in 31 spline axles for a box. The limo ones are the right length but fatter, requiring basically the whole rear. There are later ones that are longer but the right diameter. You'd need to have them cut down to proper length and the splines extended. Someone on here posted the particulars, but I can't recall where. Ootdega maybe? Dunno.

8.8 gears is 8.8 gears though, they'll bolt to any 8.8 or 8.5 carrier and work fine.

All that said, if you do find a drop-in proper length axle, please let us know where it came from. There isn't any down side to them, they're just a bit stronger at the inboard end is all. Honestly you'd never notice any difference unless you had a hot enough engine that you were breaking the splines on stock axles.

You could send your axles to Moser and have them make 31 splines. They need your originals for dimensions.

The axles are being custom made and shipped from my mechanic's contact in El Paso, Texas. I don't want to step on his toes and ask about his suppliers.

I'm just hoping everything works out fine. Which, you know, because God hates me, it won't. Just because.

hm, not sure who's making axles in El Paso. Moser is in Indiana.

Would be worth asking about the supplier. A poor quality axle will give you trouble. If its a modified length production axle (I'd expect this honestly) I'd want to know what axle they are starting with. You don't want some lousy grade one with lousy heat treatment that will fail in a short amount of time.

Half the reason I ask about stuff like that is because fundamentally, I'm both cheap and lazy. I don't want to spend the money twice, and I definitely don't want to do the job twice.

I'm starting to think someone's pissing down my back and telling me that it's raining.

I am going to consider buying them elsewhere and then converting the parts invoice I paid him to labour.

honestly it might make more sense to just leave it with stock 28 spline axles and change the carrier on the 3.73 gearset. Not as strong, but honestly you're liable to have the rear blow apart before you have to worry about the splines being your fail point.

I have a general aversion to wear or failure items that are custom-made, especially on a daily driver.

How difficult is it to change the carrier?

Half dozen bolts or something. The ring gear bolts to it, just unbolt the ring gear from the 31 spline carrier and bolt it to a 28 spline carrier. The clearances and such would all need to be set but swapping the gears requires that anyway.

Alright I guess I need to procure a 28 spline carrier and then just put stock axles in the thing.

Either way, I'm getting sick of waiting.

you have one in the car, but if its not a traction lock I'd probably shop for one. 3.73 open would suck.
