There shouldn't be any shims. The cross shafts sit against the frame, and the bolts thread into a captive nut. Try and get the new arms close to where the old ones were. Its not real critical since the adjustment is at the end but if you get the shafts too far out of position you may not be able to make it up with the cams.

Thanks gadget. I think I was thinking of my 68 Camaro when I mentioned the shims.

The snow storm we got this weekend pushed me back a few days on getting my suspension done. Tonight I managed to at least get the bushings burned out of the upper arms. It was a little trouble working around the shafts but after getting a little black lung I was able to burn out the bushings. I also was able to clean them up & hopefully tomorrow I can paint them. Weather permitting of course.

yeah, GM stuff shims. Ford stuff is mounted to the top of the frame instead of the side. Same basic design though. You just get different excuses as to why they can't align things properly.

Got some time to work on the lower control arms tonight.
First I pressed out the ball joints.

Then I burned out the bushings. One bushing in each arm came out easy & one in each arm gave me trouble. I don't know how some of you guys do this without an Oxy Acetylene torch?

so do they just sort of pop out after a while? Is there rubber left inside the control arm that you have to clean out?

I used a map gas pipe sweating torch when I did the bushings on my 88.

I heat the shell evenly. Eventually the rubber bushing will start to smoke & flare up. Heat it a little more then try & push the bushing out with a big screw driver. Don't be scared if the rubber catches on fire, that'll help it come out easier.
Just be careful & keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby. It's much safer to do it outside but it's too damn cold right now!

If there's rubber still left in the shell it should just come out with a wire brush. If it's still stuck in there use the torch to cook it a little more & then try to scrape it out.

                      I started painting today.
I did the upper arms & the knuckles in a satin black.

I masked the shells so excess paint doesn't get in there.

And painted the lower arms in a nice gloss black.
I don't know why but I feel the cast iron parts should be satin black & the steel parts should be gloss black.

Does yours have the factory weirdo tubular upper arms? That was a 1980 Lincoln-only thing that seemed to show up once in a while. Maybe they all had it, but since you couldn't get ball joints it may have been standard to refit with stamped upper arms when the ball joints wore out.

Yes, mine has the tubular upper arms. I didn't realize that was a 1980 only thing. Maybe it had todo with my car having the 351 Windsor engine? Which was an 80 only thing too.

Possible. I think I've seen them twice and I never looked to see which engine it had.
