There shouldn't be any shims. The cross shafts sit against the frame, and the bolts thread into a captive nut. Try and get the new arms close to where the old ones were. Its not real critical since the adjustment is at the end but if you get the shafts too far out of position you may not be able to make it up with the cams.

Thanks gadget. I think I was thinking of my 68 Camaro when I mentioned the shims.
The snow storm we got this weekend pushed me back a few days on getting my suspension done. Tonight I managed to at least get the bushings burned out of the upper arms. It was a little trouble working around the shafts but after getting a little black lung I was able to burn out the bushings. I also was able to clean them up & hopefully tomorrow I can paint them. Weather permitting of course.1980 Lincoln Mark VI - Now With New & Improved 4.6L Modular Power!

yeah, GM stuff shims. Ford stuff is mounted to the top of the frame instead of the side. Same basic design though. You just get different excuses as to why they can't align things properly.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

so do they just sort of pop out after a while? Is there rubber left inside the control arm that you have to clean out?

Just be careful & keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby. It's much safer to do it outside but it's too damn cold right now!1980 Lincoln Mark VI - Now With New & Improved 4.6L Modular Power!

Does yours have the factory weirdo tubular upper arms? That was a 1980 Lincoln-only thing that seemed to show up once in a while. Maybe they all had it, but since you couldn't get ball joints it may have been standard to refit with stamped upper arms when the ball joints wore out.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Possible. I think I've seen them twice and I never looked to see which engine it had.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
