    2004 Grand Marquis Steering Issue

I Had play on drivers side inner tie rod. Replaced both inner and outer rods. I still have play and it appears to be where inner tie rod connects to steering unit. Can anyone please advise if this is a problem and if a new steering assembly is needed? No leaks in steering system. Thanks in advance.

You mean the shaft that comes out of the rack is moving in & out?

Yes. I assume the play is coming from where the shaft screws into the steering unit inside the boot.

I should say that in describing the 'play', it could be 'in and out' or "a little 'sloppy'. In comparison, the passenger side is very tight with no play. Hope this helps.

          Additional info

The vehicle was involved in an accident several months ago. It was hit hard in the right front bumper area. Could this have damaged the Rack and Pinion internally? Any help is appreciated.

Yes. The rods that stick out of the r&p are part of the r&p. Don't know if I'd call them inner tie rods since you can't replace them. If there is excessive play in it, the rack would be your culprit, especially since you have noticed one side has significantly more freeplay in it.

Thanks very much. Is there any re-builder that you would recommend over another?
