    Power steering gearbox upgrade

Well, my power steering gearbox is leaking pretty good. Was quoted $500 to replace it, with parts and labor. Is the 98+ power steering gearbox really like $250? I would do the work myself, but its about to get into the negative temperature range, and I don't have a garage.

It's actually around 400 before the core is removed. Requires modification to steering shaft, power steering hoses and such.

      Well, that answers that.

Worth it IMO. No more pinky steer or worries about wrecking the car because you sneezed.

The car steers just fine now. I dont have any issues with it aside from leaking. If I had the space/time to do it myself I would do the upgrade, but I don't so its not really an option right now.

I am still sitting on a Red Head gear box with new pitman arm and hoses waiting for a first person to give me $175.

Is that the same torsion bar as the stock one, or is it fatter? Mostly the thing with the stock boxes is the weenie torsion bar. That, and they've mostly all been rebuilt so many times they are half shot right out of the box.

Too bad shipping from Canada wouldn't be worth it

The pertinent question, for any rebuilt item, is "rebuilt by whom"? Too bad that question is nearly impossible to answer!

most of them are A1 Cardone, but the cores are just pooched. The Fox Mustang guys are well into that problem with the racks. Most of them are just worn out beyond having good driving feel, even if they might function in the bare sense of the term.

How much was it new? I'm thinking of having them make me direct fit for my 93.

I don't really recall. I think it was close to $400.

Figured it would be at least 300-350. But that's the cost for the best.

How much extra work is it to upgrade?

                              Its a bit extensive. http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthre...l=1#post729976

Imho it is not worth to do to a vehicle you are just trying to keep alive. If you wish to keep the vehicle for years and years to come as a weekend car/toy then I see doing these mods as worth it.
