    So, I forgot!

    Some months ago I asked about upper ball joints on my '86 MGM Tudor.
    I thought they had never been lubed, since I did not remember seeing any zerks.

    Today had a LOF done, and while on the lift I saw them! Yep, the upper balls have zerks in them!

    The ball on the pass side has a boot that is split and the grease just comes out, the driver side has the boot still intact.
    How much grease should one pump into the boot, till just plump?

    The broken boot on the other side, any problem just leaving it alone and pumping in grease?

    The boot is basically there to keep dirt and other stuff out while keeping the grease in. In theory, if the split is small enough, you could keep putting grease in much more frequently so that any dirt or water on the exposed grease gets pushed out instead of working its way into the joint. If the split is big, or if you drive on dirt/gravel/wet roads a lot, I wouldn't advise it.

    As for how much grease, I read about one type (probably Moog) that has a 'pressure relief' boot that will allow grease to seep out when overfilled. They recommended filling it all the way so that some of the old grease comes out the next time you grease them. If there's no such pressure relief, then you don't want to put much in since eventually it will fill up to the point of causing the boot to come off or split.

    That's my understanding anyway. I presume I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

        I was trained (many years ago) to fill the relief boots until some of the old grease comes out. Wipe off the zerk fitting first before adding grease. If grease does not like to go in, install new zerk fitting.

            year old thread, yeah I know.

            2 pumps per fitting every oil change is all you need.

            If its been forever, see if the part is even any good before wasting grease on it.

            If it is, and its been ages, add grease until you see the boot move a bit. Once its pushing grease past the joint and into the boot, its got as much as it can actually make use of.
