    Difficult Using Shifter...

Lately, I have noticed, on my '87 GM, there is some difficulty shifting into the proper gears on the IP. They don't line up properly and it doesn't go into "1" at all. Is the issue the plastic "ring" around the column (bushing?) or it is another issue? I know the shifter, itself, is "floppy" but I think that is the spring that is probably in several pieces. Photos and/or links would be great!!

This could be a bit tricky. Sometimes this is due to broken parts, sometimes just to loose or even missing bolts which hold parts of the shift linkage in place. Somebody needs to look under the column and see what is loose.

The car should be chocked front and rear so it does not move when shifted out of park.

Unless I missed it I didn't see any bolts missing or loose. Saw a video, on YOUTUBE, where the guy had two T30's that loosen up or drop out. Didn't see that assembly but the guy had a F150 so not sure I have the same setup.

is the car physically going into gear and it's just the indicator that's buggered? If so, yeah, plastic collar has crapped out, zip tie and be happy. If the car isn't going into the right gear or has difficulty with such or is like half a shift off, check the linkage (rod through collar with bolt) next to the brake booster (left side of it staring at it) and make sure that bolt is tight. If not, adjust it to the correct position and tighten the hell out of that bolt.

Probably use it Thur morning, when I go food shopping, so I can provide more info then. If it is the plastic collar, does it just get zip tied together (I assume there is a split in it) or is there something special to do with it??

Took the steering shaft covers off today and notice the shift indicator "ring" that surrounds the shaft was cracked where the two sides join up. Can you remove the screw and zip tie through there joining the two halves? Is there any adjustment beyond that to line up the shift points on the indicator? Anything else I need to be aware of??

This fix will make the indicator read properly but will not address poor actual shifting, like not getting into 1st or Park.

Can you look at the movement of the column linkages when you shift between gears? (car off and chocked) You may very well see loose parts that will help you id the problem or at least determine if it is in the column or further down the line.

the zip tie will fix the indicator. If thats all that ails it, off you go. There are a few bushings in the linkage that might need a shot of oil or something to help free it up if its stiff. Those same bushings will cause sloppy shifter action if they are worn out.

Haven't been driving much but as I remember it goes into every gear but the gears don't line up with the indicator. Saw the broken "ring" so figured if I remove the screw and zip tie it tight it may work. Don't see any kind of adjustment so I guess it being tight works. I think the mis-alignment make me think it doesn't go into every gear but I think it does (will need to verify that). We'll see...

When you re align the indicator, (chock wheels first ) put it in neutral, line it up and tighten. Or replace with a new one. The one I told you about re-listed.

Zip tied it today and it is pretty even. Lines up almost perfectly. Goes into all gears so good enough, for the present. I placed a bid for the part on EBAY but the guy is on vacation till next week. Never hurts to have a spare incase this fails in the future.
