    Nasty surprise

Had the Merc on the lift, to check the rear brakes over before inspection, and came across this nasty surprise. I wondered why the car was leaning recently. Had a heavy load in the trunk, so I didn't give it much thought. Ordered new Cargo Coils for her. Will have them in on Monday. In the meantime, I have a shitbox Astro van from my job, to get back, and forth. I'm just glad it didn't take out the brake line.

That looks like the coils are installed upside down. The coil should get smaller at the bottom where it sits on the axle.

That's because the bottom coils are MISSING! I put them in 10 years ago. The spring actually rotted, and snapped off. I've never seen that before.

I was thinking it looked like the wrong spring, or it broke. Its definitely not supposed to look like that.

Ouch! At least you found it before it caused some severe damage.

Got the Merc in during my lunch hour today. With the lift, and air tools, it took all but a half hour to do both springs. I raised the rear of the car, set the frame on jackstands, disconnected the lower shock mounts, and lowered the rear. With a little persuasion with a pry bar, the springs came out with no problems. Here's what came out of the car. I also took pics of old, and new side by side.
