    Frozen whine

    Dear Panthers,
The Shooting Brake (aka 89 CP) had been sitting for a couple weeks when I left for Atlanta, 7 am 5 degrees after a ten minute warmup. When we reached a four lane after about an hour of driving I noticed a high pitched whine - sounded like wheel bearings, that kind of whine. It occurred between 55 and 65 when pulling a mild hill - more pronounced in OD than D but present in both. No whine either faster or slower. If I left it in OD pulling a hill it seemed to flutter slightly at the very end before it quit.

Not wheel bearings. Sounded like running gear or tranny but Scott installed new U joints w/the auminum drive shaft a year ago and the tranny was serviced three months ago. After another hour, I never heard it again over a three day drive in all sorts of weather.

I wondered if the very cold weather might have slightly distorted something - or maybe harmonics???

    Anybody else?

    Donald

I'd wager some cold weather harmonics and only worry about it if it comes back and stays.

sounds almost like stiff lube that wasn't moving well yet. Maybe the gear oil in the rear hadn't gotten fully flowing or something. Could also be just a tolerance thing. Parts shrink up in cold weather, and it may have moved something just enough to make a little noise. Probably nothing to worry about.

Mine makes an air intake whine at highway cruise with the throttle in certain positions. I have a zip tube style intake on it and depending on throttle angle it'll set up a "wind-in-the-trees howl" that you can hear with the radio down.
