    Weird transmission/drivetrain issue

I'm not quite sure what else to call it, its been going on for a few months now... I live in an area with lots of hills/inclines/declines and am generally parked on one. Here is the issue; I start up, drive down the road maybe 100 feet (in specific, drive downhill), come to a stop, and even though I'm in drive she'll just sit there and rev with no power being transferred to the rear end (its like I'm in neutral). I'll have to put it back into park and back into drive slowly, and then after about 5 seconds of idling it will re-engage whatever is having the issue and I'll be good to go. Its only happened on my first stop, but today it also happened after about 10 minutes of driving. I have no idea what the issue is. I did a trans filter/fluid change last year and it all came out completely clean with no debris. I've had no known leaks or changes in driving style and the only thing that I can think of that has drastically changed is temperature. I went from the 120 degree weather of AZ to the 20 degree morning of Colorado. Any help is appreciated.

Could it be slipping into Neutral??

Its very possible but I mean neutral is a few gears away from D isn't it? And if it is slipping into neutral what does that indicate? When it does shift, it shifts strong and fine...

Even though there aren't any known or obvious leaks, is the trans fluid level still good?
I've had this happen on cold days and usually it is worse/more noticeable if the level is a little low (had a leaking trans cooler line). Once things got warm enough I guess the fluid would expand and cause the slipping to stop, but as long as I kept the fluid at the proper level cold temps would not have this affect on the trans.

I checked the trans fluid and if anything it might be a bit too full. Could that cause this issue? Another thing to note is that I put a trans cooler in around June this year. I'm starting to suspect its the colder climate

I had this same problem on my cv after transmission service, upon further inspection I realized I did not put small square gasket on the filter. After install no problems.

You're talking about that square cork one right? I'm pretty sure I put that in... I might just do a trans and filter change anyways, its pretty easy.

This has GOT to be directly related to the weather. It snowed and was colder than its ever been here since I moved here and she slipped the most today. What would be the best synthetic trans fluid I can use? I've been recommended royal purple by a buddy of mine. Can I just drain my old stuff and put in new fluid or do I need to flush the trans?

just a pan drain and fluid filter swap will leave about half the fluid in the trans and you should go back with similar. If you're going to go with a new fluid, you'll need to flush it as well.

The Grand Marquis will slip in cold weather, only when fluid level is low, and only when the fluid is cold.
