Why big brakes, ABS and police suspension & steering w/lopo

    Dear Panthers,
Saturday I'd just passed a double trailer on I-81, 75 mph, on the tail of white car, one of those new semi-circular jobs.Top of a hill. Suddenly white car's brake lights on and he veers into the truck's lane and I hit my brakes hard and follow right behind him through a litter of broken plastic and glass.

Minor two-car accident in the fast lane, moments ago, drivers just getting out to wonder "what the hey . . .". If I'd been back halfway between those trailers it would have been brakes PERIOD. 118 feet from 60 mph - I dunno from 75. Might have stopped. As it was, by chance, I could veer into the truck lane and except for wondering what damage the breakage was doing to my tires, no harm done.

I've made the argument that handling and stopping are more important than speed. This is why. Having enough power to get through an intersection is important but at some point the 0-60 times are far less important than the 60-0 time.

You can also use the 0-60 a lot more with confidence in the 60-0. My Mazda is only marginally faster than my Vic, but ABS, almost no body roll, Michelin's most aggressive all season tire, etc. allow me to hit the gas a lot harder in a lot of situations because I can, you know, stop and turn.
