    P/s box

Hey guys. Steering box in my 89 GM has been leaking for quite some time. I was trolling on Ebay the other day, and came across this. I figured "why not?" It has all the parts needed for the conversion, and I have a new ragjoint already, along with the fittings, unions, etc. I also have a p/s cooler out of an 05 E-450 bus. I also have a new FORD pitman arm to go with it. I believe I have everything to do this. If not, somebody please chime in.

I did the swap. Def gives a heavier feel. I say go for it. You have to cut the high pressure 98-02 hose and adapt it to your power steering hose. I used a $10 hydraulic union from napa. No leaks. Works perfect. Cut the low psi side and hose clamp it to your p.s. pump. Adapt the 79-91 steering shaft to the 98-02 flange. I drilled and used grade 8 hardware. Good luck. Btw. Prob nothing wrong with it, but how much for a new/rebuilt unit with warranty?

About 350 dollars,, without all the bells, and whistles. Where did you make the splice in the high pressure line? And what size is the line? I'm thinking, at a quick glance, that it's a 5/16" .

5/16" or 3/8" I think. Not sure where his splice is, but mine looks like this

You're like me, Scott. I'll do a double flare, before I use a compression union.

Hey guys. Been a little busy at work. Was able to do some work on the p/s box. I replaced the pitman arm with a N.O.S. one I've had laying around for a few years. I cut the rivets off the flange, and I cleaned out the mounting bolt holes with a tap. As I was cleaning up the box itself, I came across this nice little surprise. Unfortunately, the lines that came with it were bent too close to the fittings to be of any use. I'm going to try to get a used set to cut up, but if that fails, I'll get the cheapest set Rockauto has. Even with shipping, it's only going to be $25 for the pair

I went on Rockauto today, and ordered new hoses.
Part Number Part Type Price EA Core EA Quantity Total

                EDELMANN 80251 Power Steering Return Hose $ 7.27 $ 0.00 1 $ 7.27

                Visa -$ 24.59
                Balance Due $ 0.00
In the long run, it ended up being a whole lot cheaper than any local parts store (29.99 just for the pressure line!!). I like to do things once, and be finished with it!. now to hit the service manual to see what the torque specs are for the mounting bolts.

Like i said, I used a union from napa that worked beautifully. Never leaked a drop and stands up to any pressure ive given it.

87stars_stripes, I used to use unions, but have had them leak before. I work on busses for a living, and it is actually illegal to use them, especially on brake, and fuel lines. Those MUST be double flared, and connected!! Since then, that's all I've ever used. It takes a little longer to do, but in the long run a whole lot safer.

A union is a double flare connection. I think you're thinking of compression fittings, which suck balls. Those are good for like 300 psi or something. Fine for an air line, but definitely not for brake or PS pressures.

Aaahh, gotcha! Over the years I've known alot of people refer to compression fittings as unions, so that's where my line of thinking went, sry. Stopped by the house where I bought the motor for my Merc over a year ago. He still has that Crown Vic in his yard, So I gave him 10 bucks, and grabbed the steering shaft out of it, so I can do the flange mod without tying the car up. I marked the top of the shaft(3 PUNCH MARKS ), just as I did on the top of the flange (SEE EARLIER POST). Rockauto sent out my P/S lines today, so I hope to have this done by the end of next week. I've been working long hours, and only have my lunch break to do anything.

Dave, sry man. Passenger looks to be mint. Drivers was gone long before I got there. I did look at the fender when I got the steering shaft. It has the cornering lamp, and the lower CV trim. I'll have to call, and see what he wants for it.

I have a p.side already though it is a grand marquis one. If the price is right though I would buy it. Tough finding that d.side one though from any model.
