speedometer starting to gum up

The speedo in my 88 seems to need me to take it out and lube it with some pb blaster every couple of weeks lately. I'll lube it and then it will slowly gum back up. Should I lube it with something else? (this is the part where the cable connects to the back - the section up to the spinning weight? thingy)

when it "gums up", the needle will stop going back down (it will eventually make it to 0... overnight) and will be slow to go up as well. I'm debating just tacking on an autometer digital speedometer by tapping the VSS signal somewhere. I'd rather not spend the money on that though.

PB blaster isn't a great lube. Try something called tri-flow.

It's a super light mineral oil that is supposed to be for bike chains in dry conditions. I use it for quieting down PC fans with noisy bearings and one drop shuts them right up.

You could also try a dry silicone lube.

you have to pull the whole thing out, clean all the old grease off and then regrease and reinstall.

Or just spend like 20 bucks and buy a new cable.

nothing to do with the cable... it's well lubed... it's the speedo mechanism itself that the cable plugs into.

I'll look for some of that tri-flow. I doubt dry lubes will work since it has to flow into the mechanism.

Your best bet is a sporting goods store or a dedicated bicycle shop. Or order it from their website.
