What year rear ends will fit my 91?

We decided to go ahead and put a new rear end in my 91. One with less milage. Mine is basically shot...(240,000 miles!) About the only thing that was still good, was the ring and pinion, and the pinion has alot of wear where the bearing is... So it is a source of noise.... So, What year rear ends will fit my car? I found a 88 Grand Marquis with only 86,000 miles, I am going to look at it now... (In a local junkyard) Does the drive shaft have the "flange" on all years, and if not, can it be swapped? I thought my 88 had the old style "yoke" instead of the "flange" style like the 91's, but it has been so long since I had that car, I can't remember... I know the Grand Marquis rear ends are the same, (Other than maybe the flange / yoke setup) Will a Towncar fit? I was thinking they were a few inches wider.. And I think the wagon is wider, if I remember right. Any help is appreciated...

Oh, and what letter is the code for the 3.08 ratio, on the door sticker? Just wondering.

Are you saying that your bearing race spun on your pinion shaft? This would the the only way the pinion shaft could "wear". Did you visually inspect the pinion? Since any other used axle assembly would still require bearings and seals for a guaranteed long life, there would be no real advantage to you getting a different one. Why not rebuild yours?

I went and looked at the rear end in the Gran Marquis... it actually has only 81000 miles... only reason it is in there because it took a hard hit to the left front... other than that, it WAS a nice car! (Probably some elderly persons car) The rear end is tight, no slop in either the axles or the pinion. My mechanic is going over Tuesday to take the cover off and look inside to be sure before we get it... The Junkyard wants $120.00 removed from the car for me... $70.00 for the Rear end, and $50.00 to remove it. That is a deal because it is dangerous around here trying to remove it yourself... (Sandy soil, not too stable.. I saw one fall off the stands they use one time, by itself, due to a gust of wind... the sand shifted, down it went! I do not get under cars at the junkyard...) Probably get installed weekend after this, as I am off that weekend. I also located a nice station wagon, with the eleven inch rear drum brakes.. I may get the backing plates etc, to convert mine to the larger drums on the back. Might as well do that at the same time. Oh, also, it is a 3.08 ratio open rear end, too... just like mine.

$120 is a good price from what I see.

          I just paid $200 for an '88 3.08 open out of a P72 (with 11" brakes).

Really??? Must be from Scott's supercheap Pick Your Part. Place I found wanted no less than $200 for a disk rear with essentially no reusable brake parts, and it was a lousy 3.27 open.
