Well, mine howls when on the gas or decelerating, a steady cruise it makes no noise. It will get louder with speed. And if you get weird noises while turning (grinding etc.), that's more of an axle bearing. Noise from the back of the car obviously mean.

Nope, no grinding like that at all or noises when turning. Does acceleration and deceleration howl indicate yours is on the way out?sigpic

Was out for a drive and listened as carefully as I could while still driving carefully. The only whine to speak of is just like the first gear whine, but much quieter and only happens at the top end of a gear, pitch rises and then disappears with the new gear, then when the motor spins up again it reappears.
My brakes fucking suck, though. Back brakes are grabby. I thought of you today when somebody pulled out in front of me on a busy street and I had JUST enough time to modulate brake pressure and stop without locking the back wheels up. My girlfriend and both of my cats were in the car (on the way home from the vet) at the time.
It is 100% getting discs. If I start talking nonsense about repairing my drum brakes again, fucking slap me.sigpic

My Dad's '68 LeSabre has 4 wheel drums (the big finned aluminum jobbies), and that car will dop on a dime, throw you through the windshield, and leave you change. Granted, they are properly adjusted, and generally one of the larger drum systems.
Some of the mid sized sedans of the '60s had 9" drums on all 4 corners. My Dad said it was unbelievable how difficult it was to stop his '65 GTO (which was so equipped). Pedal fade, wheels locking up, etc.**2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302: 5.0/ 6 spd/ 3.73s, 20K Cruiser

AOD whine is due (I believe) to the gears they use for first gear, which is nearly a spur cut, with almost no helicality (is that a word?) cut into the gear at all. It's stronger this way, but noisier. It's akin to the whine you hear when you back up in a manual transmission, because reverse has to be spur cut in a manual.Originally posted by gadget73There is nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.
