Sometimes I drive my mother-in-law's 2007 V6 Mustang. I drive it to check the brakes, oil, and so on. It has the 4.0 V6 which is nothing to brag about. HOWEVER, I very much enjoy the feel of that automatic transmission. I love the shift points. The gears seem so close together. I looked it up and its not much different from the regular 4 speed autos as far as ratios go. I read that the size is the same. Im just. Ford just seems to have added a gear between 1st and 2nd. Anyway, I think this would be great on a 302 or 4.6. So, here it comes.... What do you guys know about hooking one of these babies up to a 80's or 90's 302??? I hear that the 5R55E were only made for the 3.0 and 4.0 V6, YET I have seen them on Explorors with the 302 and 4.6. Any info? These sell for like $350 used and $850 rebuilt on ebay. If I can do this, I will and document it for you nice people. Any info on the bolt patters and drive shaft placement?

I believe 302 explorers had the 4r70w.
My moms explorer 4.6 has the 5 speed. The first gear is real low. 2nd gear is like the 1st gear on an aod/4r70w. 4th is direct drive. 6000 rpm wot shifts.
I don't like that it doesn't have a dipstick. When you change the fluid it has to be flushed at a shop. Sometimes the shift timing feels odd, like it winds up a little. At half throttle in the lower gears it will shift at 4000 rpm.
I don't think it would be a good match for a low po 302. It might buzz it too much and take it out of it's powerband...
It would be a good match for a Marauder though. In fact the Lincoln Aviator which had the same engine as the Marauder had this 5 speed transmission...
