    "U" Joints question

I searched the site for an answer for this, and didn't find one... so my question is---

When getting ready to slip the yoke back into the tranmission, should I put some grease on the inside of the yoke, just for some extra protection, or will the trans fluid do the job, and of course, will it work its way into the transmission itself, and possibly mess something up? Just wondering if I should do this for some extra lube, and to keep it from "clunking" as bad... (I have had brand new yokes do this, so I don't think it is "worn out" or anything) Just figured with a little grease in there, it would quiet it down some when going into gear....

If you want to use anything this stuff is probably the safest. http://www.handsontools.com/Kent-Moo...t_p_13139.html any other type of grease I would be cautious of. If the output shaft seal is new it should do it's job of preventing fluid seepage.
The tolerances machined into the assembly should be enough to prevent excessive play, is the trans mount possibly worn? Backlash on the rear diff within specs?

It's just the yoke has a small minute bit of play, like they all do... just wanted to put a little bit of grease inside the yoke before we slipped it back in... more or less just a small thin coating on the inside splines....

Trans gel would probably be the safest bet then since it's formulated for trans work. You may be able to find a smaller cheaper container at your local parts store, usually the independent stores have a better selection of greases.

Put some on the smooth side of the yoke as well, it will make sure the seal doesn't start up dry.
