on the tranny is a rod that goes all the way to the throttle body. There may be an adjuster screw on the top of that rod at least on a cfi car there is. You should also have an adjuster screw at the bottom of the rod which holds a tension spring. Make sure that didn't disappear because that also controls the shifting. Also check to make sure all the grommets on the tranny brackets are in good shape. If there cracked chances are the rods will disconnect causing the tranny to not shift.

Yep, that's the TV cable, it's mounted on the throttle body plate adjacent to the throttle cable. There should be a grommet in there and it should be secure.1989 Lincoln Town Car - "Anabelle" - Original block, .030 over with SpeedPro pistons, rods fitted with ARP hardware, FRPP +volume oil pump, GT-40 3bar heads, Crane 1.72 rockers, 89' Fox cam, 93' Cobra lower intake, Explorer upper and 65mm TB, 93' Lightning EGR spacer, K&N intake kit from a 4.0L Ranger, 19lb/hr injectors w/ 87 Mark VII ECM, cat/smog deletes, Big Brake conversion, 3.55 K-Code Trac-Lok/Disc brake rear axle, CVPI LCA's w/1" sway bar in rear, wagon front sway bar, BBK 2.5" off-road H-Pipe, Flowmaster super 40s, HPP wheels, 3G alternator w/LMR.com wiring kit, gear reduction starter conversion, Best 1/4 time: 16.0 @ 85mph.

When my OD went out, I knew it, the fluid overheated, turned black and brown and smelled aweful, then the front pump seal blew out and started leaking. If you have none of these symptoms, chances are you can fix the problem without a rebuild. Have you ever used RTV on the pan gasket? That RTV can harden inside the tranny and clog the valve body, and the valve body must be very, very, very clean. Make sure that if/when you change the filter and install the little square gasket in the proper place and TORQUE the filter to the correct spec, because it can distort if you unevenly torque it and mess up shifts. Also double and triple check that your fluid is at the right level. You can also drain the converter if it is stock, but you must rotate the engine until the drain plug is visible (after removing the rear engine inspection plate) Finally you need to set the TV pressure with a gauge, find someone who has one or take it to the dealer, there is a test port on the passengers side of the tranny.Last edited by 89LincolnTWNcar; 12-09-2010, 11:15 PM.1989 Lincoln Town Car - "Anabelle" - Original block, .030 over with SpeedPro pistons, rods fitted with ARP hardware, FRPP +volume oil pump, GT-40 3bar heads, Crane 1.72 rockers, 89' Fox cam, 93' Cobra lower intake, Explorer upper and 65mm TB, 93' Lightning EGR spacer, K&N intake kit from a 4.0L Ranger, 19lb/hr injectors w/ 87 Mark VII ECM, cat/smog deletes, Big Brake conversion, 3.55 K-Code Trac-Lok/Disc brake rear axle, CVPI LCA's w/1" sway bar in rear, wagon front sway bar, BBK 2.5" off-road H-Pipe, Flowmaster super 40s, HPP wheels, 3G alternator w/LMR.com wiring kit, gear reduction starter conversion, Best 1/4 time: 16.0 @ 85mph.

I saved my towncar from going to scrap, the TV grommet failed and the car was driven without any line pressure. I bought it before I was towed away for 150 bucks. It's a very common problem, and if the TV cable has been off and it has been driven- the trans is fried.
On the other hand, the large clunk you heard could have been a hard part in the trans breaking. I've had both happen on the my 87 vic, 1st time was TV cable problem, 2nd was the internals of the trans rearranging themselves. (incidents were separated by 100K and lots of abuse)
Can't really say where to go for a good rebuild except for a local PA guy.... But that's a bit far for you!Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

ya i have no leaks clean pinkish red fluid and it smeels great!! but heres the bad i helped my mechanic put in the new tranny and he put the filter on using a rachet i asked him dont the bolts to that filter have to be set a specific torgue spec and he said NO!!! im starting to think hes a bit of a dumbass now!!!! he told me he had went to school for mechanics but i think he lied to make 250 for the install .... i only have exp for just problems ive had on carss since i was 16 and i feel like i know more than him now!!! so i guess i could start with taking the filter off and setting it to the right torgue spec right??
