    Transmission Slipping

    Ok i think i may know the reason for this. But my car sometime will not catch first gear when giving it gas from a stop until 2 seconds later. I checked my fluid and it is low it just leaves a mark on the dipstick. I am going to get more tomorrow and put it in there to see if that fixes it. Hopefully there isn't any leaks cause i haven't seen any trans fluid leaks in my driveway, where are the common leaks for transmission fluid.


    Also my friends got a issue with his 1986 f150 5.0 with AOD tranny he says the truck when the enigine get warm the truck starts slipping in it gears and doesn't catch the gears all the time. I know on AOD transmission the rod that goes down to the transmission has a screw on the very bottom of it and a spring between the screw. What would happen if he adjusted that screw wouldn't that fix it.

    dont drive an AOD with it low on fluid. They will burn up.

      is it ok to use power steering fluid as transmission fluid. i have a quart of it. the only thing is it's not red. Will that hurt anything.

          Don't use anything other then the proper transmission fluid. You can use trans fluid in the power steering but not the other way around.

            did you change the fluid and filter? forget the gasket for the trans filter?......they will slip in first if theres no gasket for the trans filter

              no i replaced the filter and the gaskets. I think it's because i am low on fluid. because it started today to slip in second.

              I am using new fluid. I use Valvoline Merc V/Dex Max Life transmission fluid.

                actually Ford doesn't even use power steering fluid in the power steering. That system uses Type F transmission fluid. the AOD needs DexronIII/Mercon or Mercon V only.

                  ok its calling on alldata to use Dexron II but it's ok to use the Merc/Dex or mercon V.

                    I believe if you look at the dipstick itself it mentions Dexron II....which is strange because nobody really says to use that.

                    Fill with fluid while the car is idling in park. Do not drive it until it is replenished with fluid.

                        Dexron III/ Mercon.

                        I wasn't aware that the PS system in these cars uses transmission fluid. This makes me wonder, then, is it ok to add traditional pwoer steering fluid to the system?

                        I know that is a major no-no with Chrysler products, which use ATF+4 in the steering system. Is it also true of the Fords?

                        In the spring I am going to have custom power steering hoses made, and at that time I will flush/ refill the system. This information would be helpful for when that day comes.

                            Dexron II was superseded by Dexron III, which is the same thing as Mercon. Mercon was superseded by Mercon V. Any of those fluids will work. I don't know when Dex II was superseded, but its probably been since the 80s or very early 90s.


                            The PS system doesn't give much of a shit about what you put in there. It just moans louder if you run thinner fluid. The F helps make it quieter, and a dash of Lucas PS gloop also helps.

                              If you know it's low on fluid, and it's slipping, you probably shouldn't be driving the car.
