You will want to undercoat the car.

How essential is it? I'll guarantee that every Canadian or northern-states car on here that's seen winter has been undercoated at least once.

85 4 door 351 Civi Crown Victoria - Summer daily driver, sleeper in the making, and wildly inappropriate autocross machine
160KMs 600cfm holley, shorty headers, 2.5" catted exhaust, 255/295 tires, cop shocks, cop swaybars, underdrive pulley, 2.73L gears.
waiting for install: 3.27's, Poly bushings, boxed rear arms, 2500 stall converter, ported e7's, etc

yes winter tires for the front are good for stopping turning. In snow i usually correct the turning problem with a little understeer.

Oh btw-- winter tires that I have are 225/75/R15. Is that strange, or a problem?
        I know standard is 215/70/R15

Just means that they're a little taller and wider than the stock tires.
225=width of the tire in millimeters from widest point of inner sidewall to widest point of outer sidewall

75=aspect ratio of tire. Means that the height of the sidewall is 75% of the width of the tire.

R=radial tire (as opposed to bias-ply)

          15=15 inch wheel diameter

Are these 225's on their own wheels? If they're on their own wheels, you'll be fine as long as the wheels fit on the car. I dunno if it's a good idea to mount 225's on a wheel designed for 215's. You might be able to do it, I dunno.

Also, your speedometer might read a little off.

I'm running the same size and I love 'em. A little bit softer than the stockers but they're nice.

225/75/15s will read 3 MPH too slow at 60, so 57@ 60, 62ish @ 65, etc. The difference will increase with speed.

if you want to tinker with non-original tire sizes, try this. tells you everything you'd need to know about the effect of that tire size (other than rubbing. THAT might be an issue in the front.) http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

I know the 225s can be mounted, there's that much flexibility in tire size.
I was wondering if it was a bad idea in the long run (hard on the transmisison?) for having a slightly oversized tire?

also make sure to wash you car right away too if driving thorough salt. I'm sure tire chains would help as well
