    spring compressor

OK, I should know this but I don't!

I'm trying to replace front springs in a box, I can't use a spring compressor that goes down the center of the spring. And I can't use a compressor that grabs the coils fron the sides because on interference from the lower control arm.

So what type of spring compressor I'm I suppose to use on this thing!

use the lower control arm and trolley jack compressor. Basically lift the car up on jack stands and put the jack under the control arm. lift up the control arm a bit to release the tension on the lower ball joint and release that from the spindle. Once that's free... the lower control arm will be able to be released downward to release the spring nice and slow like.

I appreciate your help, but my problem is not getting the spring out. It's getting it back in, I should have been more clear about that. sorry!!

just reverse the process... if it won't clear with just the ball-joint disconnected, take the whole lower control arm off and compress it back up with the jack nice and easy and reconnect the control arm to the frame and then the ball joint to the spindle.

use an internal compressor. They fit. You just have to guide the screw rod through the opening where the shock attaches up top. I've never gotten a spring back in without the compressor unless it was a shorter spring.

I was fortunate, the local Autozone had one of the newer ones as a loaner, the kind where the bottom plate slides out once the tension is off, worked great!

That thing is a bastard to use. I spent an hour with my breakover bar and still couldn't get the spring compressed enough to do lower control arm bushings. that was after using my impact wrench to tighten it.

I'd love to find the correct one for the car. What we should actually be using is the kind with the lower plate, but instead of hooks on top, it actually goes through the shock hole and compresses the spring against the frame, so its not a cumbersome extra thing you have to finagle into position. I've more than seriously considered just buying a spring compressor and then modding it to do that.

what we need is a hydraulic version that pulls the hooks on the end against the plate (or lower hooks) instead of having to screw with breakover bars.

Well, I finally got the springs back in today, it was a pain but the car is back together and now with the 'big brakes'.

I ended up using an internal spring compressor with hooks on both top and bottom, it worked great. And getting the hooks back out wasn't a problem, this is the way to go on these cars.

The way it's going, my car will have more whale parts in it than box parts before long.

the price of the kit... but it's refunded when you bring it back. about $35 I think.
