89 was the last major revision for the AOD as far as I'm aware. Theres something about the case having extra lube passages. I think one of the clutches or drums is better too, but its not that dissimilar from the 86 trans. Pre-86 is generally considered undesirable though.

      1989:
The 3-4 accumulator was moved from the case to the valve body....the 'A' O/D servo was introduced (in the T-bird SC and 3.9 supercharged Merc XR7), and the stamped-steel direct clutch basket, allowing for 6 direct clutch plates, was introduced, although there is a possibility this came earlier....agreed on the 86-down trannies....at one point, I could tell you the differences, but it's kind of pointless to have this knowledge, lol.

So far as the 1990 Town Car AOD being different....I don't recall anything specific that made this tranny stand out from the rest. If I could locate a driveline spacer to counter the shorter length, the Super Coupe AOD's are the way to go.

Negative on the input shaft thingie. However, provided you have a decent shift kit that isn't hanging up the clutch baskets between the 2-3 shift, there's little chance of breaking one under 400 hp.

They also used it on all 90-91 California emissions boxes. I see a lot more of them out here on the left coast than you do back there, I'll bet. The California boxes used the same air inlet that the 90 Town Cars do since they actually had a MAF, so in turn they actually had the integrated water bottle.

But only the 90 Town Cars got the twin turbo. It wouldn't meet CA emissions.
