    K code goodness with pics!!

Hey mangs i finally got a call from the junkyard after waiting like almost 6 weeks they finally pulled my K code rear from the limo.. i went down to the yard and like scott said in an earlier post, and i just popped the rear end in my trunk and home it came. set it up on jacksstands, and promptly took the cover off to dump the old fluid.from what i can tell it has had the cover off before, possiably looks like the Ring and pinion have been replaced at soem point or another, but everythign looks good so far, here r some pics for yall enjoy!

What year is that from? Looks like its out of a box based on that rear brake line setup. The later limos have drum brakes in the back, but they have hoses at the ends.

Whats the spline count on the axle? Its unconfirmed that limos may have a 31.

Pull the axles and count the splines. The pinion pin has to come out. There is a small bolt holding that in. If you can't see it, rotate an axle to bring the bolt around where its visible. Once you slide the pinion pin out, DO NOT TURN THE AXLES. The parts will all fall out and you'll cuss at it. Push each axle in, and pull the C clip out. Slide the axles out. You probably want to do this anyway since the bearings and seals ought to be replaced before you install it. Personally I'd do all the bearings, but at a minimum, do the outer bearings and seals. Replace the axles if necessary, often they will be pitted and worn.

from what ive looked at i should be fine putting it in after a nice cleanup job and some royal purple and some brake shoes and such. it should last me fairly well until a couple months when i get th emoney for rebuild.seals are fine and not leaking.which is good unlike my current axle which is leaking from the passnger side.

My understanding is only 98-2007 town cars with the limo prep package got 31 spline axles. keep in mind the car had to be ordered with a limo prep package, just because a company converted a car into a limo, doesnt mean it was ordered with the package.

it appears you have an older K-code (notice the square tabs on the clutches... one is broken btw) newer style clutches have a rounded tabs.

I would rip the thing apart and rebuild it. new clutches, bearings, races and seals. Also make sure to inspect the axles for pitting/flaking/galling.

You can't tell by whats visible what issues lie in there. Pull the axles, and then you'll know whats going on. The stuff in the middle always looks good, its the ends of the axles that take the abuse, and which are most likely to be a problem. Rebuilding the traction lock unit is also a great idea. I drove a car with a worn out unit for a long time, and it was nearly as useless as an open rear.

is it possable that the clutch wasnt made with a tab its the same way on the otherside.

NO... more likely both tabs broke off.

this is why they went to the rounded tab, less stress on the tab and less breakage.

I'd think if the tabs snapped off, you'd find them in the bottom of the housing somewhere. I wonder if perhaps in that configuration, they only used 2 frictions instead of the standard 3 frictions. If thats the case, you'll have a steel plate where the third clutch belongs.

It's $70. A wise investment to rebuild it now then in the car. Fairly easy and straightforward to.
